D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Hit or Flop?

You keep, routinely and regularly, conflating a streamer or production company "losing money on streaming" with a movie losing money on streaming.
This is not the same thing. Claiming that these are the same is as valid as saying that since there has been more box office revenue in all theaters this year when compared to 2019 in total that all movies have been profitable.
It's not rational.

More because another excuse these days is "but streaming".

You can claim all sorts of things using that when no one actually knows thr numbers. It's also very indirect sure lots of people may watch HAT on streaming but are they there for that or Star Trek or whatever.

Eventually something is gonna have to give on streaming and Paramount is one of the ones often short listed to as one to be bought out or go under.

I didn't read the 80 pages, but I have a question and this seems like the place for it.

What are the known variables contributing to the movie's financial under-performance?

Everyone I know liked the movie. This makes me think that variables other than quality were involved.(1)

What other new releases was it competing with?

Were other world events influencing the number of people watching movies during its release?

What other factors can go into poor performance at the box office that don't actually reflect on a movie itself--and were any of them present for this one?


(1) I'm not discounting a bias towards association with people who would like a well-made D&D movie, but I don't want to just assume that's the whole answer.

Yeah but none of that matters for a movie making money via streaming

Had minmal impact on HATs drop off.
Not enough bums on seats week 1 was the big problem. What caused that (Wick/Mario) idk.

My theory was a D&D movie released in March with Chris Pine as the lead.

I know people who did not go and watch the D&D because they wanted to watch Mario instead. Going to the movies is considered expensive by many people, and tons only decide to see one of the movies showing rather than spending their money on multiple.

Yeah that could be a factor. I don't think it's as big as what a few people think. D&Ds still fairly niche compared with other IPs. Eg Barbie cost a similar amount.

quality is rarely a deciding factor in the performance of a movie. Ultimately it did not sell enough tickets, starting in week one (i.e. before quality was really known / word of mouth was involved) and then continued a pretty common pattern of reduced sales every week thereafter. No extraordinary decline, just the usual.

None, unless you count the Covid aftertmath

A 60% drop is frequently a bad sign, see Wakanda Forever, the latest Mission Impossible and other films that have 55%+ drops from week to week.

The decline does not really matter. It’s that when people saw the movie lineup and decided to only watch one movie. Most decided to see Mario.
