D&D General BG3 Massive Spoiler Thread

Trouble is, it can also screw with even much smaller encounters if there's a dialogue trigger on approach. It just seems to mess with the combat trigger, and can lead to the enemy getting a whole slew of turns in response to your supposed surprise attack. I had issues with it in encounters such as the windmill-gnome goblins, and the couriers cornered by gnolls.
Ambushing and trying to talk your way through encounters are equally valid approaches. Neither is "better". Don't let FOMO spoil your fun.

When ambushing, check party member portraits (and summons) for the crossed swords symbol. If any do not have it, move them NOW until they do, or they will not get turns. Note that you can turn on turn based mode before a fight starts, it makes ambushing easier.

Continued.

You are told that the enemies in the toll house are hunting Karlach, so if she walks in the front door they will attack and get the drop on you. So scope out the place without her. Find out what's going on and get the drop on those guys. Tell them you believe their story and you will help them hunt the fiend. Than stab them in the back. You do not need red circles to attack someone.

Close! You can send your Talker in with Sanctuary while everyone else waits offscreen. Combat starts, you take a little splash damage, and then the rest of your party jumps them!
That's a very optimistic take depending on the timing of Sanctuary. Hope your talker has a great initiative bonus, because otherwise "a little splash damage" could easily be "is not only downed but actually killed" because when enemies only have one target they focus on them until they are dead-dead. Usually a little safer is to send the talker up, and before the conversation finishes, attack with the rest of the party.

Is it just me, or does Gortash look like he still dresses the same way he did when he was a member of a 90s alternative band? Hard to take him seriously as a villain. I'm expecting him to break out in song, singing Truly, Madly, Deeply at any moment.

He certainly looks the most like he's trying too hard.

No worries, I'm running an 8 Dex and 8 Con Wizard and use this trick to great success on Tactician. Splash damage IS an issue, but Sanctuary is just that good. Too good, honestly!
