D&D General JMISBEST's questions. Most of them about campaign ideas that either he or A GM he knows has and wants to know what people think

I followed that it’s AD&D 1e, up until the social part. Is that from the original Unearthed Arcana, or some other source? I don’t remember UA having details beyond Class and parent’s marital status, but it’s been 20 years since I played AD&D 1e.

Or maybe it’s from Birthright or something else?

For what it’s worth, my current PC, from AD&D 1e and now in 3.5e, had somewhat similar stats (high Int and Cha) and is Wizard 8/Sorcerer 1 now. The choice to take a sorcerer level was helpful at lower levels, but not having a 5th level spell at 9th level is a bummer.

In general around here, folks assume D&D = 5e, to a lesser extent assume FR is the only setting. (Shrug)
The Social Class stuff was from Issue 11 of A Very old Roleplaying Magazine that ran between sometime in 1983 and sometime in 1987 and even though they've been popular with most of The GM's I either know or have know I don't know if the social class rules from the issue in question are official

How popular are they among most of The GM's I either know or have known? you may ask, let me put it this way. Every campaign I've ran have used some version of them, roughly 82% of the campaigns I've played in have used some version of them, roughly 66% of the campaigns people I know have run that I haven't played in have used some version of them and roughly 47% of the campaigns people I know have played in that I haven't played in have used some version of them

Sounds like an interesting rules addendum, do you have the magazine title or failing that the author and article title?

I'm still bored and to pass 20 minutes I decided to use tables A Mate made to generate The Spells that are in The Books of A 13th level Int 20 Human Magic User

After generating them I wanted to know if this character was to appear in A 1st edition Dnd Campaign you were running where their are choices what spells would you choose?

In case your wondering I'm aware that the rolls I made on the tables The GM made are both very restrictive and very limiting but it happens

Here's what I ended up generating for him

He has 15 3rd level Spells 5 are chosen by the other, of the other 10 I get to choose any 3 of Blink, Clairvoyance, Fireball, Explosive Runes and Protection from Evil and the other 7 Spells must be Dispel Magic, Hold Person, Infravision, Lightning Bolt, Monster Summoning I, Protection from Normal Missiles and Water Breathing

So if this was your campaign which 3 Spells out of Blink, Clairvoyance, Fireball, Explosive Runes and Protection from Evil would you choose and bearing in mind the other Spells he has what 5 other Spells would you choose?

He has 11 4th level Spells, 4 are chosen by me, of the other 7 I get to choose any 2 of Fire Shield, Icestorm, Polymorph Other, Polymorph Self and Wall of Ice and the other 5 Spells must be Charm Monster, Confusion, Dig, Extension I and Monster Summoning II

So if this was your campaign which 2 Spells out of Fire Shield, Icestorm, Polymorph Other, Polymorph Self and Wall of Ice would you choose and bearing in mind the other Spells he has what 4 other Spells would you choose?

Of my characters 7 5th level Spells I get to choose any 2, of the other 5 I get to choose either Feeblemind or Monster Summoning III and the other 4 must be The Spells Animate Dead, Hold Monster, Magic Jar and Teleport

So if this was your campaign would you choose Feeblemind? or would you choose Monster Summoning III and bearing in mind the other Spells he has what 2 other Spells would you choose?

Of my characters 4 6th level Spells I get to choose 2 of them and the other 2 must be The Spells Control Weather and Spiritwrack

So if this was your campaign what 2 Spells would you choose?

He has 1 7th level Spell that must be Cacodeamon

Its Imagine Magazine Issue 11 and I'll add it to attach files, but it only covers the basic rules for Social Class, Background and family, the rest of the stuff I used was made by A Mate that I promised I'd never share her work with anyone without getting her approval first and since she died back in 2001 I can't persuade her to let me share the other stuff, rules for inheritance for example, I used that she made. Sorry

I initially forgot to mention that I did convince her to let me show the results and the things character got or inherited from rolls on her tables but not the actual tables. PS for my 17th birthday, why I never knew and now I'll never know, she gave her consent for me to take credit for her work, but if only did so once she'd been dead at least 10 years

The Tables are on page 15

Ah I see those tables made it into Unearthed Arcana and they are indeed mostly official house rules.

I'm sorry to hear that your friend passed away in 2001, they must have been a great friend indeed.

She was

I will admit that I've always suspected that the main reason that she said that I could take credit for her work but only once she's been dead at least 10 year is because she planned to create more tables for things like inheritance that were so much better then the 1st 1's she made, the 1's I use, that eventually she would no longer be concerned bothered about the possibility of me giving copes of them to someone that would take credit for her work

How the other GM's I know and have known got their hands on very similar tables I don't know but since most of The GM's I know and have known were still in school in 2,001 and she made 158 mostly finished draft copies but only 14 fully finished copies I can make a very plausible guess as to what happened

The very possible guess as to what happened is that between 1 6th and 1 7th of The GM's I know or have known got hold of 1 mostly finished draft copies and because they weren't finished they finished them, gave them to friends and the rest of The GM's I know and have known got finished versions of my friends draft copes

I have A question about my 2nd Dnd Campaign which was also my 1st 1 that used the 1st edition rules. To sum up was I right to try and maintain some resemblance of balance with the other Pcs when a lot of luck during the solo adventures from the basic game could have seen my character have over 1,000 XP whilst at the time I joined the other 4 characters each only had 0 XP?

Full details

My 1st 2 adventures were the 2 solo 1's from the basic game, in the 1st adventure I was lucky enough to resist Bargels Charm Person Spell with A 1D20 roll of A 20 then hit and kill him with A 1D20 roll of A 16

Because of how much XP I would have got from the cash, gems and killing Barget I persuaded The GM that to make sure my character didn't have 500 or more XP then the others only give me the XP you'd get for failing to resist Bargels Charm Person Spell Bargel +10% or 230 +the normal 10% gives 253 XP +the extra 10% gives 253 XP

So did I do the right thing in persuading The GM to ensure that my character didn't have close to 500 XP more the other players by only giving him The XP he'd get if the player failed the roll to resist Bargels Charm Person Spell? then persuaded Aileena's church to swap the potion of growth for 2 potions of healing

As well as which in the 2nd adventure I got all loot and defeated all foes, saying that surviving involved using both potions of healing and even then by the end of The 9Hp I started with I only had 1Hp left out

Like with adventure 1 again to try and maintain some resenbalance of balance with the other players I agreed to get 1 5th the XP I should get

Bear in mind that after asking the advise of The GM whose group I later joined the loot I got was double the number of platinum coins, triple the number of gems, triple all other currencies, The GM made Bargel A Chaotic Evil 3rd level Magic User that because of his gambling addiction had both 2 less 1st level Spells then normal and 1 2nd level Spell more then normal and even though he wouldn't normally have A scroll that holds 1 3rd level Spell he does have A Scroll that holds 1 3rd level Spell

That's why he had 2 Spellbooks and 1 Spellscroll that held 8-2 or 6 1st level, 2+1 or 3 2nd level and 0+1 or 1 3rd level Magic User Spells

I've just remembered a idea I had for A Npc I was planning to use in A Edition 3.5 DAD Campaign but I never used the idea and I have a question about it. The question is would his mother being A Commoner that earned A Noble Title shortly after he turned 19 years, 2 months old make The Npc in the idea A Noble?

The Npc had A Common Born Mother gave birth 11 days after she turned 17

The Npc became A Adventurer when he was 19 years, 1 day old and his mother was 36 years, 1 week, 5 days old and just over, meaning within 4 days, 2 months after The Npc became A Adventurer his mother did something, I never decided what, that resulted in her being made A Very Minor Baroness

What I want to now is would being the son of A Women that despite being of common birth earned herself the title of Very Minor Baroness shortly after he turned 19 years, 2 month old make The Npc Future Very Minor Baron or would being the son of A Women that was born A Commoner that was only made A Very Minor Baroness shortly after her son turned 19 years, 2 months old mean that The Npc isn't A Noble
