If one came out strongly against cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves in 2002, the year before Starbucks introduced the pumpkin spice latte, we would have treated them like crazy people.

The spices themselves are great, all stars, even.

Their ubiquity is the only real issue, but even then, is the world smelling like cinnamon worse than the Pine-Sol smell of fake Christmas tree scent we will be unable to avoid starting on Nov. 1?

Ruminating on a pumpkin spice RPG thing.

Retail seasons only have a loose relationship to the holidays themselves.

I do love eating Valentine's candy (chocolate covered cherries) on Jan. 1, though.
My wife saw the year's first Christmas stuff for sale about three weeks ago.

Although back in 2020, I heard a commercial for a big Christmas party on German radio (they have the best 80s channels) in JANUARY! I remember thinking that seemed a bit presumptuous, as if anyone would know in January what they wanted to do at Christmas. Looking back, I'm pretty sure that their hubris was what caused the pandemic.

I have become slightly more tolerant of this over the past couple of years. While it can seem like just a lack of any other marketing strategy, there's a couple of things that make it okay, to me.

1) A lot of folks aren't exactly swimming in extra cash, and holiday spending needs to fit across several months to fit within a tight budget.
2) Crafts supplies, at least, need to be available early, because it takes significant time to actually craft with them.

Yeah, back when I was a kid, people started putting Christmas gifts away on layaway (paying for it over time in order to get it out of the store's storage room) as soon as they'd paid for back to school expenses.
