D&D 5E Planescape shows up in the wild. Tease from Chris Perkins.

How many pages was the original Planescape box set? I mean if you're expecting this book to cover the level of detail and information that the entire Planescape line for AD&D 2e did... well I'd say your expectations are the real problem.
224 2E era pages. The new set is 288 5E pages. Importantly, their "gazetteers" are both 96 pages, but word count for the 2E era pages is definitely higher. Even so, I was under the impression that Planescape was 64 page books, so there is more room in there than I thought, and therefore it might not be as shallow as I assumed.

ETA: I was completely wrong about word count per page. Completely. Huh.

No, actually, the word count density on 2E Planescape is noticeably lower than a 5E book. So 5E pages ho quite a bit farther.

Since folks will no doubt tear the thing apart to examine every detail as soon as its released, there's no need to commit to anything sight unseen. But we certainly have seen the art, so I think personal judgements about it are warranted.

In a vacuum yes, I agree. Though, given their history and stated publishing strategy this may very well be the only Planescape content we get in this edition. So, with that perspective, yeah the depth complaint has merit.

How? When the Planescape boxed set was released there was no guarantee it would be fleshed out to the extent it was. But one could run a Planescape game from that boxed set. Again expecting the type of depth one got from multiple supplements over the span of years is just unrealisitic.

Well, will you look at that. My memory severely failed me. I gladly concede the point.

Matured doesn't necessarily mean objectively better (if such a standard can even be applied to art). It might be better by WotC 5e's standards, but I still don't see it as better or as good than his older work.
Right. You're free not to like it. Unfortunately, you're on here saying things like his art is "a meaningless link to the past if his art is different (meaningless for any reason other than enticing veterans to buy something anyway)." As if there's no possible way that a new D&D fan could like his art. (If anything, a new D&D fan is very likely to like his art more than any of us old 'uns).

Anyhow, this is getting in to typical ENWorld territory where someone says "I don't like X" and another responds with "I do like X" and the first (or someone else) says "You're saying that I'm not allowed to not like X" and the other group responds with "YOU'RE saying that I'M not allowed to LIKE X!"

Everyone is allowed their opinions.

The PSBS was intended as the start of a line of products, which it was. No such intention is apparent in 5e.

Unrealistic? Probably.

Understandable? When this is likely going to be one and done, also yeah.
