Every single position they take is a hill they will die on. There’s no point. They will never concede any point, no matter how small.

To paraphrase the late Janis Joplin: "It's all the same freakin' hill, man..." :p

Also, just because...

What I thought recently (and to be clear this was about myself) was "Is going in objecting the base assumption here, when that's what the whole thread is about, anything but your cantankerousness justifying thread crapping here?" And then closed the tab.

I probably could have followed your example here very recently, but I couldn't not snatch low hanging fruit.

When the base assumption is flawed, or not even defined?

Nay sir. It is your duty as a dweller on the internet to fight that good fight. ;)

Its hard sometimes, but you just have to realize that sometimes all you're doing is being an annoying contrarian in those situations. I'll cheerfully take on a premise I don't agree with in a middle of the thread, but I don't know that its got any purpose when its the whole point of the thread, and someone seems to want to talk about the implications or consequences once its taken.

If its in the middle of a general thread, yes. If its the base of the thread (at least the first), I don't really think so (undefined is, I think, a different story; getting that unpacked can often even be useful to the thread originator).
