D&D General Is DnD being mothballed?

My point is, its the best selling RPG ever..and it doesnt look like it, it looks meager, in terms of content, production and releases.

And best selling RPG ever i dont think means much to those guys, because they can make more money by just giving away the license, to make a video game and watch the money just come in. Its not worth much in comparison, and certainly not worth actually giving money too, unless they do a big digital initiative for microtransactions, no one is giving the DnD 5e team millions to the develop the RPG, thats going into the movies, and video games. They are giving that dev team chump change in comparison.

Meager compared to what? I’ve bought new exciting RPGs like 2 years ago that came out with like 1 expansion. Heck TOR2E is just NOW taking orders for their first actual adventure book.

Before Stranger Things and Critical Role.

Also the playtest were a phenomenon too.
The hugely popular Big Bang Theory was pushing it main stream back in 2009, as were other shows. Critical Role and Stranger Things just had a magnifying effect. And still do.

It's simply not possible to objectively attribute the success to the release rate.

As a person around for 3E, YES there was too much stuff. I think 5E is wise to pull back the throttle. And even with that it’s still over saturated a bit. But all lines get bloater after so many years
They were literally publishing a book a month for 4E for a while. It was just too much, even for many of the most dedicated players. For that matter, after a while they just seemed to run out of ideas.

5e was the mothballing. Remember the 'evergreen edition'? That's why the new suits threw a full diaper tantrum over it being 'under monetized' when they came in looking for a corpse to pick and found a big community built through almost no effort of their own. DD1 was meant to be an unmothballing, but is in an awkward position after they got their knuckles rapped trying to steal from the OGL cookie jar.
