I got it in a recent PDF bundle from Goodman Games (I think last month on Humble Bundle or something). It was nearly their entire 3.5 output for pennies on the dollar. The absurdly huge pdf sells for $60 but occasionally goes on sale for dirt cheap. I've seen it for five bucks.
Curious, did the party destroy the three shrines of power? Did they fight the least powerful version of the Avatar?By the way, I DMed the first published version, under the 3.0 ruleset, and the party managed to get to Orcus, who TPKed them mercilessly. Overall, it was a great experience.
That's tough. Sometime what reads well is doesn't play as well as you would think and areas that seem boring shine in play. Also, whether you play with theater of the mind or with battlemaps and VTTs will change the experience.Back to Rappan Athuk. What's your favorite floor/area? As I mentioned before, I read the first area and didn't care for it. I'd love to give Rappan a second chance, but since it's a billion pages, I'd appreciate a tip on an especially good section to check out.
When did you run it? For the 5e re-release that is no longer true. There is a series of low level adventures with the Zelkor's Ferry supplement. The Mouth of Doom can be run with (very careful) low-level characters. Castle Calaelen offers low level adventure and the possibility or creating a stronghold/home base for the party. The party can certainly level up to high tier one and perhaps low tier 2 before setting foot in RA proper.(Rappan Athuk is, IMO, a poor campaign megadungeon because it doesn't have a low-level component. You can't easily let new characters explore the first couple of levels.)
Did the same thing. Castle Calaelen is now Town Calaelen. With the keep greatly built up, a temple, wizards tower, arena, etc. After the Cloister of the Frog God was cleared out the monk in the party turned it into a monastery. We have been playing it for a while. I started running it but had to had it off to another group member because my schedule changed, so now I just play when I can. Since we are doing the 5e version and needed a gold sink, we have incorporated Strongholds and Followers and took.over the old castle in the "starter area."
