Legend
Neil Gaiman (whom I don't particularly care for), Stephen King, Guillermo del Toro, Alan Moore, and John Carpenter all acknowledge Lovecraft influenced them. But then again, I hear The Butthole Surfers have a lot of other musicians who were their fans, so maybe you're right.Lovecraft was a terrible author. The only decent thing he wrote was The Colour Out of Space. Everything else was overwrought, hacky, purple prose naughty word. The only reason he's remembered at all today is that he allowed other, better authors to play with his creations. If the Cthulhu stories were judged on their own merits alone, they'd have all gone out of print half a century ago.
