People like what they like, but for every miss I've had when trying something new and/or out of my comfort zone (and I've had some truly spectacular misses!), I've had at least ten meals that rocked my world.

That's the tradeoff you learn to accept and embrace. I have few regrets in life, but the ones I have all involve things I didn't do, things I didn't try, and places I didn't go.

But that's certainly not everyone!
My first time being out of the US was in Thailand and the biggest miss I had was some shrimp with rice from a small cart which in hindsight should have been obvious had questionable at best refrigeration that led to the absolute worst case of food poisoning. But I learned from the experience and can’t think of another bad experience with food abroad. Probably the best food I’ve ever eaten was during my deployment to Afghanistan when our interpreter bought a ton of different food for us. I have no idea what any of it was called, but it was good!

The fake meat industry is a good idea, though. Climate change is going to make beef cattle and other animal husbandry increasingly expensive for the consumer. At some point, Impossible burgers and the like are going to be the cheaper option, and the companies making products like that will be well-positioned.

Still, I can hope that, along the way, more Americans will discover the joys of a good biryani and the like. (Biryani is one of the best meals on earth, IMO.)

The way I look at it is like this- there are some things that are, for lack of a better term, acquired tastes. Stinky tofu, for example.

But the vast majority of foods that people eat around the world? They eat it because it's GOOD. If a whole bunch of people like something, then I should probably give it a try!

Durian candy…

A coworker of mine from Nepal brought some into work to share. Ugh..

Sure. But there are so many other areas where we could do so much to improve things. Airlines running hundreds of empty flights to maintain their scheduled routes at airports, as just one example. Cow farts are a problem, yes. But it's such a minor problem compared to...everything else.

I think we're going to see changes across the board soon.

I'm on vacation. I don't have time to help everyone work out their unresolved traumas today.

OTOH, if anyone is looking to add to their roster of unresolved traumas, I too am on vacation and am willing to help. Check out my work in the NuTSR thread or Unpopular Geek Opinions thread for some examples of ways I can sour your views of your childhood heroes. It's amateur work, to be sure, but I've been thinking about writing a book.
