One of my favorite Christmas memories was about 19 years ago, when I first moved out to Oregon and I was spending my first Christmas away from my home. My housemates (one of whom was from Mexico, and another who was from Arizona) and I decided to make tamales for the holiday. It took all day long--we literally started before breakfast and we weren't done until the sun went down--and we enjoyed lively chat, numerous beers and snacks, and even some Mexican Christmas carols along the way. We all learned a ton about the traditions and home cultures of our respective families, and we had a wonderful dinner to top it all off.

I wonder what Marty and Laura are doing these days. I should send them a card.

I have been a tamale recipient for far too long in Southern California, receiving them as gifts from friends and neighbors. (Probably my favorite Southern California tradition.) It was time for me to learn how to make them myself, but man, it really drives home what a legit gift they are.

Oh absolutely. As a gift, a basket of fresh, homemade tamales would move me to tears.
