D&D (2024) Rogue's Been in an Awkward Place, And This Survey Might Be Our Last Chance to Let WotC Know.

Again on paper there is very little reason not to use ranged most of the time, but in practice I see plenty of melee characters. Players find them fun, its as simple as that.

Eldritch Knights and Bladesingers will do more damage on a melee build than a ranged build and these are among the highest damage martials without expending limited resources.

You can use a different property in your main hand, for rogues it's mainly Vex, which if you hit, gives advantage on your next attack.

You can, but it has to be a light weapon, which would limit this to a shortsword or hand crossbow.

Though using a whip to give -10 speed is also possible.

A whip is not light and nick would require an attack to happen with a different light weapon. A club is light, so you could use that to get the -10 speed effect, and then nick with another weapon, but Club is not finesse so you would be swinging with strength (unless you had a Monk level).

A person with low Strength can still benefit from an Athletics proficiency, thus escape a grapple.

Dex isnt mobility. Mobility requires Climb, Jump, and even Swim.

Only Strength is mobility. It is also agility.
Agility is how you gain more AC, which is dex. Strength will never be agility without a house rule defying any semblance of reality.

Dexterity = manual dexterity = precision = fine motor skills

Strength = athletics = body agility = gross motor skills.
agility could be both, sure for sprints in straight line you could say that is all STR, pure muscle power, but when you come to any uneven terrain or changing direction, then another part of agility comes into play. Also dex is reflexes and that is 100% for AC.

Sneak attack is a finesse or ranged.

True. But you can take a feat to make it non-light.

Even then it wouldn't really be strength. I mean, all of dex is pure muscle power. You are using your muscles to move. Whether it's strength or dex depends on which muscles and how you are using them. Brute strength is strength. Muscles used for speed and deftness are dex.
