Oddly, black pepper in particular is especially bad, and the absolute worst is the practically dustified pre-ground stuff; it's weapons-grade awful when snorted up the wrong hole.
Respectfully, I think I've found your problem. ;)

(Though, of course, tonight's Friday night, so here's a chance to get crazy. Break out a credit card and the mirror and get spicy!)

Actually, it would be June 27th. That's International Pineapple Day, after all.
Maybe that's why the current storm system has suddenly been called...

‘Pineapple Express’ sweeps California as an atmospheric river fuels storms and floods the state

I mean, where do these names come from?! "Atmospheric River" and "Pineapple Express." Can we just go back a few years and just call them storms, or more accurately for California, some rain?

Southern California. But my ancestors are Northern European, so the assumption is clearly that encountering a chili pepper might be fatal. I have relatives who have a problem even with freshly ground black pepper, so I understand where these restaurants are coming from.

I'm apparently just toned ambiguously enough (I'm half Croatian) that they tend to assume I'm Latino and do whatever.

Americans are a silly lot. Everything is the most sensationalized and exaggerated version of itself.

We don't have heartburn; we all have acid reflux disease. It's not a writer's cramp; it's Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Other holidays have declared war on Christmas, every headache is a migraine, and we don't have rainy weather--we have "atmospheric rivers."
