Autumnal
Bruce Baugh, Writer of Fortune
I’ve been known to say that whining is an important part of a healthy mental diet. A lot of the time we refrain from dumping our whole burden on others, because they have their own load already. There are ways of communicating physical and mental pain and impairment while keeping a relatively calm and functional manner. While I understand ranting endlessly about your unresolved issues is cheaper than therapy, me putting you on ignore is also free.
But sometimes you just gotta let it out. Social masks aren’t for 24/7/365.25. It’s good to be honest from time to time about feelings of helplessness, incapacity and incompetence, mourning for lost routines and opportunities, the works.
The trick is to not camp out there. Whine, get some relief, and get back to the work of living. I start off with a lot of sympathy for people who are having a good whine, but they can use all that sympathy up in not very long. Whining is not a substitute for necessary action, it’s more like a defogger, deicer, and windshield wipers for when you need them.
