Judging by his comments in his Treasury of Dragons, he is slightly less of offensive characterature of dementia, and slightly more egotistical. But wasn't the dementia an act anyway?

Yes, it was an act. But even that amount of "nuance" is apparently too subtle for 2024 optics.

Who's the replacement that left after Spelljammer? I thought Crawford and Perkins became the chief rules architects, which is the equivalent to Mearls's role as Lead Game Designer until Tasha's.

Ray Winninger replaced Mike. It was before Tasha’s as well. Mike left the rpg team in 2019, Tasha’s was released November 2020 so his input was minimal compared to earlier books. The psionics system for example isn’t anything like what Mike was working on. When Mike left he was “Creative Director” and that’s what Winninger took over as “executive director” and now Cox.

Personally, I'm glad it's not longer acceptable to treat people with dementia as figures of ridicule. Dragonlance managed to be offensive to practically everyone, and that's one that hits me personally.

There's a difference between making fun of dementia and the doddering old man archetype, and I think Fizban was much more the latter.

As the child of a recently deceased "doddering old man" I beg to differ. I take it that you have no loved ones with dementia. And are not First Nation. Or short. Or struggle with maths. Or homeless.
