The Pinkerton was armed, I believe, but there wasn't any threat of usage or any other sort of physical violence. The only violence was the implication of getting legal action going, which is a real violence. But that violence was avoided by WotC giving the YouTuber free stuff. The result being "the YouTuber was gifted free stuff" is the main reason I have trouble getting indignant about this: if he answered WotC initial communications, he could have gotten free stuff without a visit from a private eye
Maybe you're OK with rando goons showing up and making your wife cry, I absolutely am the F not!

If I were in a similar position, I would blame myself. I wouldn't be happy, but...it would be my fault. I can put myself in the guys shoes, but that is why I find it bothersome as a rallying cry. It wasn't a great laudable situation, but...they weren't random, in the slightest. There was a definite line from "posting YouTube videos bragging about illicit purchases" to "corporation lookng into illicit activity through legal means" that had several steps in between with WotC attempting to trade him free stuff for his illicit stuff. Which in the end he got the free stuff from WotC.

Really? No. It was the goons fault. My guess is it was by their plan, their methods. In a nutshell I believe their intent was to intimidate his wife so bad it could drive her to tears. If true that wasn't his fault and it wouldn't have been yours.

the problem is that the apology tour is way in the past by now, so what improvement do you expect it to still deliver at this point…

The CC SRD and apology tour made me not abandon 5e, but you have not earned back the trust yet, let’s see the 3e SRD in CC and a new, ideally expanded, 2024 SRD.
I agree a 2025 SRD with the latest iteration of 5e is necessary − and is a good will gesture.

The DMs Guide wont even finalize until 2025, so I dont expect anything sooner.

I am curious why 3e needs attention. The 3e is already available. One can translate all of three into 5e using the 5e CC. Or oppositely, use the 5e CC to retroclone 3e. Since WotC no longer actively supports 3e, I am unsure why they should invest energy in it.

By contrast, WotC needs to release a 4e CC, since that actually is unavailable to fans. Options like Warlord and Swordmage remain legally awkward. Unless WotC plans a 5e Warlord, it would help to let fans make their own.

I would love to see a 3.5 CC and a 4e one. But I'm not sure it's needed. Not anymore anyway. Either for OSR or other games or for WotC's reputation.

How exactly was it illicit?

agreed, I call it 2024 because that is the ‘edition’, even if the last core book is released in 2025 ;)

the DMG is in 24, the MM in 25, not that it matters for your argument

it contains more than the 5e SRD and was the basis for the entire OSR

As to investing energy, I am fine with releasing as is under CC ;)

By contrast, WotC needs to release a 4e CC, since that actually is unavailable to fans.
that would be a lot of work, so I am not expecting one

In short, having 3.x as CC is insurance that they won't try to yank it away. The OGC growth has stalled because people are weary of contributing to the commons, having it also be CC would help alleviate these concerns. Also, it has way more content than the 5.1 srd.
