I'll never understand why people feel the need for their tastes (whether they like something or dislike it) to be validated by the "market".

Its not that difficult; if the market also shares your taste, you'll probably get more things that fit that taste.

Yeah, but once you have your copy of GoblinQuest D20, or whatever, it doesn't really matter if GoblinCorp goes out of business 30 seconds later. You can play GoblinQuest for the rest of time. Even if no one but you and your band of misfit friends loves the game, you have a hobby that makes you happy.

That's only the end of it if you don't want supplements and offshoots to GoblinQuest though. I would suggest that most people want things beyond one self-contained game book.

Yes, but what I observe is usually rather less reasonable. And in the case of disliked things it becomes sometimes outright irrational, with people going out of their way to argue against the success of stuff.

Its not uncommon for people to perceive a particular product that they think has displaced one the like as The Enemy. Sometimes because its actively counter to what they want (some of the more hostile Old School types show this one) but sometimes just because it displaced what they want.

If I ever want to really annoy some OSR person (I don't), I'm torn between insisting that Pathfinder is OSR, or that everything after OD&D is not OSR.

"Oh, you're into TSR-style D&D? It's a bit too mainstream for me. They really sold out after 1974, it just wasn't the same."

I've seen a few people seriously argue that at least from AD&D on.

Eh, went to the park and saw the eclipse. I thought all the kids running around and playing in the park was a better sight.

I saw the total eclipse in 2017 and one you've seen one, you've pretty much seen them all. I had no interest at all in this last one as where I live it wasn't even total.
