D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

The sorcerer in D&D is established as a different thing from wizards and has been different from wizards longer than 1E lasted. It isn't a book nerd and if you thought the folks complaining about Warlord being removed were angry, try it on a class like Sorcerer that's been in the game since 3E
Let's not forget that sorcerer is a playable class in 2e as well.

85 pages of discussion, and a random sampling of them reveals to me that nobody knows what the real issue is.

It's the fact that the Warlocks are only in the subservient position, dependent on a higher power for their magic.

What about the Warlock-as-master? I demand recognition of those who command the arcane spirits, not obey them! ;-)
The "warlock" as the master is a different class.

Possibly the binder. Possibly a new class.

Yes. @Micah Sweet is suggesting giving wizards metamagic.

This raises the floor of power and requires all other classes to raise up with it.
Sure. How I would do that is to take away arcane recovery and not give the wizard any extra resource for using metamagic, they could use it by upcasting spells. Not sure how balanced that would be, but at least it would be trading one thing for another rather than just a direct buff.

Also different wizard subclasses could have bespoke metamacal effects, which would help them to play differently.

Too bad One D&D is killong them.
I had really hoped that divine soul and shadow sorcery were the two new subs in the PHB. They need a rework due to the changes in the sorcerer. But WotC chose the lazy path of picking the two subs that the work was already done for and punted on the Xanathar ones which needed as much work as the PHB ones.

Maybe the next everything guide will come and fix that ..

I think there's design space to keep it within Warlock without needing to create a new class. The power-dynamic aspect of Warlock's source of power, when viewed through the right lens, can be seen as pure lore/fluff. The old Shaman 2e class is a really bad example of the concept. You could go the animism/College of Spirits Bard route, but I'd like to see abstracted further than straight-up animism, and without the jack-of-all-trades aspect that comes with a Bard.

I'm working on a Pact of the Host subclass, but holding off until we see how the Summoning spells turn out for 5.5, which may affect my design significantly.

Nothing can fix no longer picking subclass at first level.
