I came into D&D with 2e in 1993. I played a hybrid of 2e and 1e, then jumped on with 3e and 3.5, intermixed with classic World of Darkness games, Shadowrun, and others. I jumped on 5e with the Next playtest and played it for several years.

But these days I run DCC at my FLGS, and I truly believe it's the godsend of TTRPGs. Inasmuch as I had started to write my own Basic derivative game, but DCC does everything I wanted a game to do and does it better than I could have conceived.

I started D&D with 3.5, but i did play 2ed ad&d for some time when my group got fed up with 3.x/PF1. We switched to 5e when D&D Next playtest came around.

These days, only 5e. There is no chance in hell i'm going back to 2ed with it's gazzilion tables and THAC0. If their is recalculated 2ed with normal saves, to hit and AC, i might give it a shot though.

I want to know who's the one player who didn't play TSR-era Dungeons & Dragons and who doesn't play current Dungeons & Dragons nor any old school versions of old Dungeons & Dragons... yet still comes onto a Dungeons & Dragons website and message board to see this poll and vote in it, LOL!

I almost feel like I should now go onto a Car & Driver Appreciation discord server and vote in some poll of theirs stating I don't have any preferences about cars whatsoever. ;)

EN World is a D&D fan site, but I find a lot of talk about TTRPGs in general. In fact, its sometimes refreshing becasue dedicated sites can be echo chambers and its sometimes nice to get that well rounded opinion. So, if there would be any site that folks would seem contrary to its point, EN World makes perfect sense to me.

I just picked up Old School Essentials Advanced Fantasy and it is sublime. I can't express enough how happy I am to have it now and yet how sad I am that I slept on it until now.
This is old school D&D refined to perfection. This IS D&D.
What do you specifically like about it?

I played AD&D 1E and 2E until WotC released 3E, and then 3.5, 4E, PF1 and lastly 5E. Besides 3 or 4 sessions or ShadowDark last year, as of over 2 years ago I am no longer playing D&D or any other AD&D/D&D adjacent games.

I recently find a pdf detailing Old school style. Principia apocrypha. Principia-Apocrypha-SC-20.pdf

« The more of the following a campaign has, the more old school it is: high lethality, an open world, a lack of pre- written plot, an emphasis on creative problem solving, an exploration-centered reward system (usually XP for treasure), a disregard for "encounter balance", and the use of random tables to generate world elements that surprise both players and referees. Also, a strong do-it-yourself attitude and a willingness to share your work and use the creativity of others in your game. » Ben Milton

Old school is not tied to a game. It’s a mentality and a playing style.
It was common in early edition of DnD, but Disappear with 4ed.
But I think it is possible to apply this mentality and use 5ed.

5E has issues with the "high lethality" part, and arguably also the "creative problem solving" part given skills, spells and other character sheet tools most old school games lack.
