One of the biggest questions I have is what process they decided on to replace/replicate/continue half-elf and half-orc that includes other ancestries with multiple parentages.

They hinted at something well over a year ago, but it was rather bad. We've seen no testing or results from the "pick your favorite traits and describe yourself however you want" suggestion.

I also dislike the system that they presented, but I'm afraid that it will be what we'll get.

I have an inkling that half-elf and half-orc will be feats, rather than ancestries. Just an inkling, tho.

.hot take, but each species gets a very limited amount of traits, so playtesting is completely unneeded, there is no combo of traits that break the game, so why playtest it?

If they're going to say anything on the subject before the PHB releases, the Tuesday stream seems the most likely time to do so, since they're going over character origins.

I really hope we get something for mixed-ancestry characters with more mechanical depth than "pick-a-parent", even if it's just an optional system tucked away in the DMG.

I remember a while back they said 10 species in the PHB.

1. Human
2. Elf
3. Dwarf
4. Halfling
5. Gnome
6. Dragonborn
7. Tiefling
8. Orc
9. Goliath
10. Aasimar

It's possible that they have added more than 10 since they stated it, but I am not holding out hope that more than these 10 are going to be there.
No, weirdly, last time we got a presentation in March 2023 on the subject, they explicitly said there would be 9 Soecies and laud them out by name: no Aasamir. Tge Aasamir were named ripped recently in the Game Informer article, so they were added randomly in the intervening year and change. So, there may be other surprises, and given how often they reprinted Goblin it seems a good choice.

We haven't really gotten any indication that they are doing anything else. But if they have anything to say, it will probavly be in this video.

@LaTia J I don't expect you to be able to say much, but it would be cool if you could pass along that what's up with hybrid characters ("my mom us an Elf, but my dad's a Dwarf") is a pretty hot topic out in these parts.

Given the new Level 1 Background Feat regime, giving each Species a corresponding "heritage Feat" would make sense. My Dwarf-Elf Ranger can ne a Dwarf with the "Elven Heritage" Feat basically being the center of his Background.

Also provides a game reason why more hybrids would be half-Human, since Humans get a bonus Level 1 Feat.

They could even just make half orc and half elf lineages of humans.
