D&D (2024) What should be the power level or power budget of 1st level feat in 2024?

power level of 1st level feat

I would prefer a 1st level feat be little more than a ribbon, with a negligible power increase. Feats that allow you to get closer to your character concept.

I am thinking a feat like chef or healer. Something that shows your background and unique ability. You became a ranger because you are so observant, or alert because you used to be a city guard.

like they are now compatible?
I have run them side by side without any issues. Remember that all subclasses got moved to level 3 along with other changes.

Moving some 1st level power budget into feats reduces multiclass dips.
biggest thing I hope to have from 2024 MM is fixed CR ratings.
They said they where going over every monster, and I doubt it's going to be worse.
also one of the most popular house rules for 5E is extra feat at 1st level and that didn't broke anything that wasn't broken already.
You still can have that houserule if you want.

I dislike that broad move to 3rd level, I would like that 1st instance of subclass be split between 1st and 3rd level.
1st level only getting bonus proficiencies(weapons, armor, skills, tools) and bonus spells known/prepared and 3rd level getting the "good" stuff.

I hope that it will be a lot better and not just not worse.

OFC, maybe now we will go from one to two feats at 1st level.
the sooner the character concept comes online, the better.

I did not see the option for a 1/2 feat that can only be taken at 1st level? I like the idea of a 'little something' feat that helps make your character. Something like cooking or extra skills and not just something like sharpshooter or polearm mastery for 1st level.

I liked the regional feats back in 3-whatever and could see these as something for 1st level.

Well, kinda.

Casters get to pick their spells and martials pick their weapon effects.
Warlocks pick an invocation.
Clerics and druids can pick if they have armor or extra cantrips.
Fighters get a fighting style.

Add in the feat and opening up of racial ability scores and there is more customization at level 1 than 2014.

Maybe not to the level you are hoping for, but more than before. But they also don't want to overwhelmed new players with too many choices right away either.
