D&D (2024) What's the future of Xanathar and Tasha? (+)

"it will be used" why the passive voice, aren't you saying YOU will keep using it as-is, or am I missing something?
I will be using it as is or with tweaks guided by new features in new PHB.

Twilight cleric being the 1st to the "normalization" treatment.

Okay.

Personally, I think the options provided by the PHB should be plenty.

For the first post-2024 campaign, that is. Adding in lotsa-other-stuff can come later. It's much easier to get a feel for the new ruleset if you keep things clean. Also, the risk of inadvertently adding something unbalanced is much higher than most people realize.

Of course, you might be thinking of converting an existing campaign, in which case I do understand the desire to port across 2014 features.

However, I firmly believe player-side rules conversions are always a bad or at least mediocre idea. Much better to either keep using the campaign's existing rules and only shift once it's done, or to rebuild the content using the new rules.

Specifically, I mean "okay so you have a level N Twilight Cleric, let's keep using the 2014 ruleset until that guy's adventures are over" is the best solution. The next best approach would be "okay so you have a level N Twilight Cleric, now you get to build a brand new level N Cleric using only the 2024 PHB to use for future play sessions. If you manage to get across much or a little of the old character's look and feel, great! Otherwise, just give the new character a different name and don't pretend it's the same character, that also works!" 👍

Since much of the content will be in the new core books (with some revisions & updates), I don't think there is much need for these books. They will be marked "legacy" in D&D Beyond I think, but I am not sure if they will stop printing them / allowing them to be purchased.

Makes me glad I saved the coin and never got around to buying them. There was a few things I liked, but never anything I thought I needed. I see them fading away from play and support as well. It seems the good stuff it taken out already to make the new books coming out. I might see a sub-class that is niche enough to try out and want to play it as something and most people will allow it. Maybe something like the genie sub-class for game purposes.

I would think you start seeing updates to stuff from Xanathars and Tasha’s in new books starting as early as next year, with lots of posts on forums for people unofficially updating the existing stuff.

At this point I plan on still allowing the "old" books in my campaign unless something has been specifically replaced. I could change my mind when we actually get the new PHB, but I see no reason why my player can't still play a Way of Mercy monk* Rune Knight if they want to. On the other hand, it sounds like there will be new rules for crafting, so the rules from XGtE won't be allowed.

*EDIT: way of mercy monk is apparently going to be in the PHB.

A lot of Tasha's (including the feats and some subclasses) and a little of Xanathar's (including the crafting rules and a couple of subclasses) will be in 5.24 core. Which to me fits as Xanathar's seemed to be a cutting room floor book.

I'm expecting late 2025 to have a Xanathar's equivalent that has updated material, mostly from those two books but possibly a couple of the dropped wizard schools and cleric domains from the 2014 PHB
