D&D (2024) What's the future of Xanathar and Tasha? (+)

Why assume WotC will put it all in just 1 book?
because they already said so, I do not expect that to change. All the subclasses that have not been adjusted in the 2024 PHB will be in the first X of Everything book for 2024, along with some new ones.

I assume whatever else is in Xanathar and Tasha and did not make it into the core books will be included as well, and then both will be removed from print as well.

Well, 2025 or 2026, but yeah - should be able to use the old books until they're republished in a new version.

I do kind of hope that the "this is your life" tables from Xanathar's would be in the new PHB, but they've already got so much to crunch into there it is unlikely they'll make it. And it's not like those tables are edition specific anyway.

I wonder if they are going to stick with the theme of making it an "In-Universe" book, like 2014.. Or go back to the tradition of making them expansions like in previous editions?

Part of me misses the simplified naming. I knew that the Player's Handbook 2 would have new character classes/subclasses and player options, whereas I've found myself opening up Tasha's and looking for something I thought was in it, only to not find it... Google it, and find out it was in one of the other books.

At the same time.. I do like the theming. I guess you could call it a gimmick, and I know some people disliked it, but I liked the little in-character blurbs and stuff in the books.

They could name it something like "Player Options", but having a PHB 2 was confusing for a lot of people, especially those buying for someone else that didn't play themselves.

Apparently, the "Player's Handbook 2" or "Dungeon Master's 2" branding was a commercial disaster because it confused a lot of customers. Like grandmother's buying their 12 hear old the PHB2 because 2 is always better and more recent than the original, sort of thing. So they have made it clear they will never do thar again.

I was always a fan of the "Complete" series books..

Or maybe they could call them "Expanded"

I'm not sure what the best option is. I can see the problem in having books 2, 3 etc. It can be a turn off for a new player. When they go to buy the PHB, and see there is a second, or even third one and think "Do I have to buy all of these?"

Yeah, there's no perfect option. I don't expect to see anything like "The Complete Fighter" either because that implies a cut off and no future options for fighters. Something like "Expanded Character Options 1" might be okay, but even then some people would assume that #2 completely replace #1 because #2 is the new and improved version.

If you were just browsing books, you would have no idea what XGtE was really about. Then again, that book isn't really targeted at the uninformed consumer, so grandma isn't likely to pick it up for little Joey. So I understand why they did it that way.

Personally, when the time comes and I'm running a game using the 5E24 rules... the 5E14 PHB will be treated like any other 3rd party material... the player asks if they can use it, I take a look, make a few minor edits to the material as necessary so it works with what we have, and then they are good to go!

Although in truth... in my tables what actually tends to happen is a player tells me what type of character they want to play, and if it is not easily done with the things in the PHB I'm the one who hunts down the 3rd party material from elsewhere and offers it to the player to use. Which would now be the same thing if I thought there was a 5E14 subclass or something that would give the player what they thought they wanted.

Given how successful Xanathar's and Tasha's have been, I would expect the next such supplement in 2027 or so to follow the same format.
