D&D 5E Does anyone play 5e Perception rules as written?

For vision, yes, I do. I run games on a VTT with lighting set for the scenese, and mods that enforce vision rules and even display maps in gray scale when the character is relying on darkvision.

It is tricker when it comes to when to call for perception versus intuition, but I generally run it RAW and call upon investigation checks far more commonly than I've seen in games run by others (at conventions, one-shots on Start Playing, live-game podcasts, etc).

Nah

RAW darkvision is for exact what nocturnal and underground creatures use it for.

Fighting in melee.

Darkvision means you can fight in melee in darkness without missing all your attacks and not worry about archers.

Aka orc, goblin, and dwarf tactics.
Why would you say that? Dim light has no.impact on ranged attacks according to the SRD.

Outside of their darkvision range, the archers cannot see you.

If no one is holding a light source and the group is in darkness, the archers see as if they are blinded to everyone outside of their darkvision range.

People holding torches...are not in darkness.

Ergo you can see them.
What's your point?

You don't need to make a perception check to target enemies in dim light if they are fighting because if they are fighting, they are not hiding (rogue and goblin bonus actions notwithstanding).

This is where we get back to.running Perception by RAW: perception checks are to spot hidden things and people. You don't need them under normal circumstances.
