Today I learned, via the NY Times "The Daily" podcast, that Ukraine is using autonomous weaponized drones in its fight against Russia. Important, so I'll repeat it: autonomous, not piloted. They haven't quite given the AI in charge the trigger, but they are very close to doing so.

TIL that Frank Miller did not write RoboCop. He wrote the sequels and some comics. I was going to make a joke about being surprised there were any women in roles other than lady of the night given it was written by Miller. Well, because it wasn’t.

Also, TIL that Miller was hired as a scab to replace two union writers who refused to write during the 1988 writer’s strike.

Wow, that I did not know. I didn't have a high opinion of Miller before, and I daresay it's even lower now.

somehow that doesn't surprise me

Considering the cutting satire of the film, it is totally on-brand.

Every day I learn something new from the numlock news newsletter. Apparently, fashion sense tells us that low cut socks are currently bad....which, ummmmm. sure?
It's a generational thing. When I was a teen in the late 00's and early 10's ('Round the turn of the century I like to say) it was seriously uncool to have exposed socks. No-Shows were the norm, and it was often practice that if your parents purchased you crew socks, you'd fold them down over your heel to mimic the look of no-shows. Zoomers however have taken to dressing like my parents did when I was a kid in the 90's. Long white socks. Light washed, high waisted jeans and.... even jorts 🤮

I've personally always been, and still am a fan of ankle socks. The ones that come up just about an inch or so above the shoe line.

Yeap, ankle cut are way more comfortable. I run hot though so the longer socks might be more comfortable for other folks.

Same. I own a handful of pairs of crew socks for the winter when I need to wear my boots, but for 99% of the time when I'm sporting sneakers I opt for the ankle socks. Just enough sock so that the shoe doesn't rub on the back of my ankle, but not too much to make my legs warm.

Also just long enough that your ankle isn't exposed when you sit down if you're wearing well fitting trousers.

TIL that, at least in outport Newfoundland, lobster was once considered the food of the poor, so much so that when people ate it they would close their curtains lest the shame of their poverty be exposed.

Guess the Lobster Lobby and Garlic Butter Marketing Boards should be congratulated.
As far as I know, it had to do with John D Rockefeller growing up poor and then remaining frugal once he hit it big. But since he was one of the richest men around, what he ate gaines prestige. Or something like that. I have no source.

But speaking of sources. Have you watched the life of Leon the Lobster?
