Good point, and pre-colonization the first nations were masters at waterway travel, with canoes of all types (dugout, bark, skin, kayaks, etc) depending on the region for both the materials available but also the type of waterways to be plied. And for that matter, where in Canada also can have a huge difference in the campaign type as the geography/landscape and climate can vary a great deal: rainforest, prairie, mountains, lakes, forests, maritime, tundra, ice floes...I think an underrated aspect is the importance of transportation. Canada was first settled by following its mighty water ways, braving rivers in bark canoes.
