Canada Worldbuilding

I think an underrated aspect is the importance of transportation. Canada was first settled by following its mighty water ways, braving rivers in bark canoes.

Then came the land roads as horses became more common and people continued westward in the planes in wagons and making their ways through the forests of Ontario to reach the plains.

Then the metal horses appeared and the transcanadian railway became a major undertaking. Transporting cargo and people across the vast distance of our country.

Finally, the airways opened to us, not just with planes but also radio to carry messages. It made the country feel smaller and gave us access to areas that were previously unreachable by humans. We still have many lakes that no human has ever touched, land we never walked...
Man that gave me serious flashbacks to an old Wayne and Shuster episode where they did the old TV Kung Fu and mixed it with the National Dream.

After saving the day and the railroad, their Cain equivalent got invited to eat with Sir John A, so he was on his way today...

To Mcdonalds! :p

But yeah, Canada is a Rangers paradise/hellscape depending where you go.

While it's at a "it's written, but I need to run it for game testing purposes so pm me if you are interested", I took Kalyna Country and used the Giant's of the Prairie as places of magic that when used in sync during the summer solstice, they open up a portal to your deepest wishes.

You heard of the seven sisters?

I had the 8 Babas of power, each acting as a protectorate of a different Kalyna Relic Roadshow (as I called them).

Think of what happens when you dungeon delve and mix it with Wacky Races (as your trying to beat your rivals to the prize)

and for the record, the Giants of the Prairie have been immortalized in song. :D

I really like Canada (seeing as I'm from there) and love worldbuilding using it as a basis.

One of my white whales is making Canada an effective place to run a game.

What have you seen and done to turn Canada into a gameable world?

Shadowrun has an adventure/city book set in Toronto.

Just use Vancouver for everything like Hollywood does. You'll be fine.

Toronto too! Can't forget how much of the Hollywood has shifted to Toronto! I know someone who shipped stuff to the Star Trek Discovery set!

My Ironsworn campaign a few years ago was a near-literal transliteration of the Vinland Saga. My map of the "Ironlands" was a section of the Labrador coast that I traced in Affinity Designer and established landmarks for.

The main landmark I called the Bay of Redwater, which was the site of several bloody battles between the nu-Viking settlers and the ancient Fae inhabitants who didn't like the new arrivals on their homeland.

The HOME Handbook for Tiny Supers, which is a supplement with some new rules and characters, has a whole Canadian government superhero team which I quite like. It’s quite referential to Alpha Flight without being them, and there are western and eastern teams. The latter is led by the Great Canadian Shield, who manages to be both a Wolverine and Captain America expy simultaneously (it’s also a great name).

I’ve run a brief supers campaign set in Vancouver (where I live) and am a bit sad that I won’t be able to do the same with Coyote & Crow.

I did a Dresden files game based in Montreal and another based in Ottawa, having spent a lot of time in both cities.

Montreal has lots of cool backstory stuff and, for a modern game, the history of the mafia there makes for some interesting plot hooks, characters and enemies. The St. Laurence River as a Ley Line. Also all the old First Nations history and culture such as The mysterious ruins/disappearance of the village of Hochalaga. Also so many cool ghost stories. So much to take for a modern fantasy/pulp game. I ran it as a play by post. I have even had Bonhomme Carnivale was a Winter fey creature.
