Project Sigil is the upcoming 3D VTT from WotC. From various Gen Con reports --
  • Creative Mode lets you prep on the fly or modify pre-made content
  • Assets from Baldur's Gate 3 are included, such as the characters as digital miniatures
  • Minis have multiple poses but are not animated
  • Spells are animated though
  • Uses Unreal Engine 5 (or 4, I've seen different reports)
  • Launch on PC, mobiles and consoles later
  • Closed Beta this fall--sign up here
  • DDB subscribers will have greater access

This is the 'creative mode' toolbox, apparently!

I want to believe all of this, but I saw all this in 2008… and then in 2015… and my heart is still wounded. (Should I mention 3E’s promised “eTools” too?)

Then again, the technology and market for VTTs has come a long way in 16 years… so MAYBE this time WotC won’t screw it up? Some good VTTs already exist, so this time hopefully they’re not trying to do it from scratch

Nothing happened in 2015?

I think if they are looking for beta testers there is something to beta test.
As to how useful it is, that remains to be seen.
On the other hand given that they are opening D&DBeyond to third parties, I think that they would be smart to make it system neutral in the core and add on rules adjudication and allow third parties to make their own (or commission) rules adjudication.
This would put them a long way to becoming the Steam of rpgs. This being a good or bad thing is another matter entirely.

They also have the people from DDB and hired significant staff. So it's more likely to be successful.

Thanks for the post. I had been looking for more info on the VTT, and there was not a lot of recent stuff available. Good to see it's still coming along. It is interesting that it won't be launching with the new books, considering how important online play is to this edition.

I don’t think it’s any more important to the edition. VTT is just more widely used.

we will see about that, but technology has certainly advanced considerably, so it is easier not to screw up - at the same time releasing the same 'VTT' they would have had 10 years ago would be a screwup, it is not just technology that advanced, expectations have too ;)

oh, they are not basing it on an existing VTT, but they are not building everything from scratch either, they use a 3d engine instead of creating their own, saves a lot of effort. Probably other libraries too
