Project Sigil is the upcoming 3D VTT from WotC. From various Gen Con reports --
  • Creative Mode lets you prep on the fly or modify pre-made content
  • Assets from Baldur's Gate 3 are included, such as the characters as digital miniatures
  • Minis have multiple poses but are not animated
  • Spells are animated though
  • Uses Unreal Engine 5 (or 4, I've seen different reports)
  • Launch on PC, mobiles and consoles later
  • Closed Beta this fall--sign up here
  • DDB subscribers will have greater access

This is the 'creative mode' toolbox, apparently!

Sounds like a very reasonable guess. I also wouldn't be surprised to see extended bundles on DDB where you can buy combinations of digital access, VTT assets and hard copy.
I’d be shocked if that wasn’t the case. Presumably previous purchases will still get you a discount.

Since they removed ala cart purchases, I do wonder if you’ll be able to buy individual items—say I just need a storm giant. Unless they have build your own custom PC pack (perhaps a bundle of all options in the PH), I feel like this will almost be required.

it's a money grab
All products and services businesses sell are made to create profit directly or indirectly so sure.

The question is if this is a game changer of a VTT or just WOTC looking to get a piece of the action.

If it has the ability to do 3D environments well I say game changer.

Maybe we could see future collabas with characters and monsters from other franchises, for example husks and mist monsters from Fortnite: Save the world.

I would suggest a solo mode for players who have bought Hero-Quest but they haven't got friends to play with.

Other mode could be about building your stronghold and testing with hordes of raiders.

Or players who start with a warlord and a little group and later she is the leader of an army for epic battles style Warhammer: Total War.

Also some players would want to use the AI of the VTT to playtest their homemade classes, PC species or monsters, for example an update of martial adepts or incarnum soulmelders.

I haven't seen word on what the hardware requirements will be.
Nor is there any info on which OS they'll build for. I HOPE that they build for ChromeOS as so many <18s in the US have Chromebooks due to school

Unreal 5 needs some graphics horsepower to do detailed environments / character. I'm sure they can / will optimize to give it as broad a user base as possible, but school hardware... kind of sucks. A high end phone has more processing and graphics power than typical school chromebooks. I just retired after 30 plus years of teaching, so I have experience with it :)

Actually, that's what is most interesting about it for my money, it is the latter and not the former. It's like tabletop simulator, not like Roll20. They have apparently set it up to play chess, checkers and other games like chutes & ladders. When Roll for Ckbat takes to the team last year, they said it could be used to play any game, even Pathfinder, because while it measures space and movement and has number trackers, it all is DM adjudicated manually.
I see your point, but what you are describing IS Roll20.
