It depends. When you use the word "edition", do you mean...

a) ...a new standalone game that isn't compatible with the previous edition (such as WotC editions of D&D have been)? Then no. I believe that this is precisely why WotC is calling it not a new edition.

b) ...just about any definition other than the one above? Then, yes, it is a new edition. I hope you feel validated now.

Does it matter? WotC will continue to say that it's not a new edition. And people that care more than me (and typically with an axe to grind) will call it a new edition. The only thing is that people that call it a new edition will still not agree on what to name it).

Isn’t a revised edition a new edition?
I mean, this has been gone over a thousand times. There are two uses of the word Edition in play.

By one of those uses (normal books), D&D is on its 17th Edition (9th if you're only counting core, which would be fair) but certainly NOT SIX.

The other, is D&D's ridiculously messy version, where they threw in silly numbers like "half editions" (3e) and "Essential Editions" (4e) and "Revised Editions" (2e) and it's a mess. A mess that usually means that they're going to go through many of the previous released books and update them to the new "edition".

WotC is not going to do that this time. Most of the books are fine as-is and don't need updating to work with the new core books. They're still in print, and still on store shelves.

The only way to effectively communicate this fact is to call it "5e Revised". And only because they were unable to avoid the use of the term "5e" the LAST time around, when they tried to get rid of the nonsense of D&D's use of the word "edition".

WotC is literally trying to fix how the word "edition" is used in D&D (fix it to "D&D" and the edition year), like how the word actually works in regular publishing, and we (the community) won't let them.

That's an interesting linguistic shift. In fact, we were not talking about new games, but new editions of the same game. The video games I play will tell you what edition they are to the third decimal point.

Many games, especially MMOs, release updates that make pretty significant changes. Baldur's Gate 3 does not have a different game even though they released multiple changes, some of which were pretty major. Whether or not the PHB 2024 is a new version or just a patch update is a matter of opinion, which is pretty evenly split on opinion. But that's not what you asked - various products make changes large and small without labeling it a different version.

We are not playing a video game where a computer does all of the bits and bobs in the background. 5.5 is not a "patch" it is a core rules update that changes or modifies the entire game.
In your opinion. That wasn't what was asked.
