D&D General Dmg previews up

From the sounds of it, they made major changes, not minor, not sure how much it will resemble the UA version.

I honestly hope it doesn't resemble that version very much. It wasn't worth it to engage with the system, from a mechanical standpoint, which I understand in terms of balance concerns (you don't want a player who is engaging with the subsystem to significantly outshine one who isn't) but in terms of feeling rewarded for engaging it just was not even close to satisfying.

As an aside, I see that, based on the image they show of the Raven Queen's page of the Lore Glossary, there's lore on some Archfey, like Titania the Summer Queen, and the Queen of Air and Darkness!! I'm excited to see that fleshed out!

(Also, hoping that the Queen of Air and Darkness' Pandemonium base is still a thing! If not, I'm definitely adding it in my campaigns!)

Ooh, I had missed that. Would love to see the Fey getting a bit more lore gathered in one place.

None of their discussion about the 2024 DMG has included optional rules. That has concerned me for awhile. I don't see anything about creating monsters or spells either! This has had me very concerned.

However, I am now hopeful that this means there will be a DM centered 4th book that covers just optional rules, variants, monster creation, magic item creation, spell creation, etc.

EDIT: There is a DMs Toolkit chapter in the 2024 DMG with these types of rules presumably. So not UA style book for 5e24 it looks.

Do you have a thread talking about the early bits of 2024 monster design we've seen?

Because...uh...I have thoughts, but don't want to derail this thread on the DMG.

But your interpretation that for me it is MOAR POWER! can be and is false. Even if that is your feeling about what I want out of the game going forward.
But MOAR POWER was NOT my interpretation for YOU... it is "bigger and awesome" to YOU. It is MOAR POWER to me. Read what I actually wrote, not what you are reading into it.

Was I wrong? Was it not "bigger and awesome" to you? Those were your words, after all...
I think there is a lot of potential for the game to get bigger and more awesome over time with some of the decisions made here.
Yep. Your words.

Saying "some people like chicago style pizza and some people like new york style pizza" is explaining different tastes.

Saying "some people like new york style pizza and other people like garbage I wouldn't feed to a starving dog that just happens to be pizza shaped" is insulting to the people who hold that preference. And you intentionally decided to phrase things in an insulting manner, because there is essentially no non-insulting way to take your choice of phrasing.
Saying something is garbage to me is definining my preferences.

Your choice of words (bolded) is inflamatory since it was nothing like what I said:
That's the issue though... "bigger and more awesome" to you is MOAR POWER and garbage to me.

To me. Get it? My preferences. Not yours.

If someone loves mushrooms and serves me steak with sauteed mushrooms, I will gringe and push it away. I find it disgusting and revolting. Those people should (IMO) shrug their shoulders and say, "fine, more for me!".

I was replying to it because it gave me a springboard. It took me all of a single page to go from "Oh man, I wonder what the previews are" to "Oh god, this again? Seriously?!" Maybe even less. And the majority of this thread have either been baseless fears, or complaints about the things "obviously" not included in a product that we have barely seen a any text from.
Since I haven't read everything here or know what posts you're referring to, all I can tell you it is people speculating from what they do know, snippets here and there, info in the PHB 2024, past performance of WotC, etc.

And you know, I wish I didn't feel the need to defend what I like. I truly do. But so many people constantly tear it apart, half the time over flat out lies and misrepresentations, in every single discussion, that basically I can either defend the things I like about it and work to counter the misinformation... or I can stop looking for previews, stop participating in threads, and just stop engaging with the community all together.
Well, no, that is certainly not true. It is your choice to engage with the naysayers, complainers, or whoever. If they respond to you about something you like in a manner you don't appreciate or find constructive to any manner of discussion, just don't reply. You can engage with the people who are talking about the things you look forward to about it, etc.

As far as previews, I assume you are viewing previews from influencers you know and like? If not, it is a gamble of course and if the preview is not to your liking, you can stop watching it, right?

And it would be more bearable if they had defendable points of legitimate concern with the design, but usually it is someone who hasn't played 5e for six years because they left WoTC products for a 3rd party creator forever ago, haven't liked anything produced for DnD since 3.5, and have never had any intention of ever engaging with the product... beyond telling everyone who likes it how much is sucks for not being something it was never attempting to be. Or someone still harping about Backwards Compatibility.
Again, those people have the right to complain, however. It is your right and choice to engage with people complaining or not.

Yeah, which sucks.
Yes, it does, but people will be doing it forever in all likelihood.

In writing this I reviewed my posts in this thread. I don't really think I have said anything inflamatory or meant to offend. I'm sorry it bothers you so much, but I am not going to change my ways when I see no fault in them.

Just so you know, I had you and a few others blocked. I unblocked all of you just the other day. I even gave your first response to my post a Like. I'd rather continue to keep things civil, but in less than 6 hours of my initial posts you say my response was "False and insulting" when it was neither false, nor meant to be insulting. You took it that way, and I even apologized if my remarks about my having different tastes bothered you. Yet you continued to misread what I wrote and so we are here again.

I can understand your frustration, however, but personally I find it better to walk away than continue to engage with people who's views are so completely contradictory to my own if I find it frustrating. Life is too short IMO.

As I've said before, while I am not excited about the new releases, I am hoping I can find something useful to my tastes and preferred style of game. MOAR POWER and "bigger things" and "awesomeness" in the direction WotC has taken D&D for the last 5+ years makes me doubtful, understandably I think. Will I review the DMG and MM when the come out to check? Sure. I've got a copy of the PHB for review. Like others I like the new layout (but not the art work!) and find the Rules Glossary a nice touch.

Not everything is doom and gloom. :)

I posted quite a bit in the green dragon preview thread and some in the skeleton and Kuo toa previews, but not a dedicated thread. I would say start one, but I have out of town visitors and I will not have much time to post over the next few days.

Maybe we can start one next weekend?

Even with a digital program doing the rolling for you, you just have to tell it to roll, I have seen more than enough evidence that "please roll one single extra die" complicates matters significantly at real tables.
In my experience, digital programs make everything much slower.

It's one of the reasons why I'm still baffled at their choice to make crits "roll twice the dice" rather than the dramatically simpler "use maximized damage." Because maximum of NdX is essentially identical to average 2NdX.
I absolutely agree with you there. Not only is that slower, but it's also a bummer when you roll badly. We call it "critiful", as in, "what a critiful roll!"

Are those your core competence, or a nice benefit layered on top some of the time? I'm fairly sure they're the latter. Because yes, I did speak imprecisely in order to say less. People don't mind optional side-benefit bonuses that are random. They do mind having their core performance be that random.
I wasn't sure where he was going with that question, myself.

I and others disagree with this assessment.
Huh. I'm not sure why you'd think that 2024 is less balanced than 2014. I am sure that you don't like it, though. You've made that pretty clear. Are you sure that you're being objective?
