When Do the 5E “Ride or Die” Folks Become Grogs Like The Rest of Us in “D&D Older Editions” And When Do We Get D&D 5E Flair for Posts?

Im guessing it will be like 3.5E. At first, a few die hards will be letting everyone know every chance they can get. Just about everybody else will just move over as campaigns end and new ones start.

Yeah, if one had not already moved off of 5e, I dont really see what 5.5e does to push them away. Its just more of the same, distilled even.

I don’t see a lot of outrage. Not even a lot of folks “put out”.

Some are really mad, sure, some are “meh, not for me” of one flavor or another. Some are just avoiding WotC. But I wouldn’t say there is an edition conflict.
I am so far not interested in what I see of phb. I am neither mad nor planning to shun all 5.5.

I am hoping there are some
Designated 5.0 spaces. I think it matters for “character builds” in particular.

I think you will be just fine. Considering you can find all editions of D&D and both of Pathfinder on just about any VTT and discords are full of advertisements for games of all types.

I think that if one is a long term player there is no requirement to be excited by the new books, they are for practical purposes new splat books.
Now, I am not the same as you, in that there are things in both books that I quite like. However, I also think that for their purpose, the gateway to D&D for new players and DMs they are the best of their type produced for WoTC D&D (never read the TSR equivalents).

If you are satisfied with your current game, there is no pressing need to move on to a new version of D&D and if one wants to move onto another game that is fine also.
What is depressing about grognardism, is the refusal to accept that others have moved on.
People who move on mean that many fewer players playing the game one prefers. I can understand being bummed about that.

To me, the elimination of race as a factor in character build is the biggest functional change to the game since AD&D ended the D&D "race as class" mechanic and was really the biggest mechanical difference between the various numbered editions of D&D and the B/X & BECMI games which were really the truest decedents of OD&D and Chainmail. I suppose the 3x3 alignment matrix was also different, but it was as irrelevant to the mechanics of the game as it still is today.

It may not really matter that much, but it is a pretty big shift in the flavor of the game.

Race is still a factor in character build.
This hasn't changed.

Oh yeah, I specifically meant places to easily discuss on ENWorld.

I am fortunate with built in groups—-my kids and lifelong pals all of whom take turns DMing! Of course we are so busy it never happens enough.

I am not worried about losing games but really value talking about it here on ENworld.

Just hoping some will still want to talk about 5.0. Already with the discussion of new exploits or builds I am non participatory.

Maybe folks will still want to discuss. I was not online for
The 3.0 to 3.5 shift so maybe I am “worried” about nothing

As someone who has been through more edition changes than fingers on a hand, there is more to it than just irrelevance since it doesn’t technically affect your specific game.

For what it’s worth, there is something about a game system being bookended and no official support for it coming. Game systems are more important to a lot of people than they probably ought to be, and we end up with a lot of vested emotions wrapped up into them.

Add in that 5E is the widest played version of the game ever, and for a lot of folks, 5E IS D&D.

People change as they age as well, and depending on where one is in life’s journey when an edition change occurs, it can also just remove you from the game. I know that happened with me in 2000 when 3E was released. I had just joined the US Navy in late 1999, and the thought of trying to not only rebuild my game library, but to do so with an entire new group and a different phase of life just let me walk away from the hobby completely until I got coaxed in DM’ing a 5E game for some barely out of college 20-something’s in 2016 who didn’t know how to DM but wanted to try this thing that was becoming popular. That campaign lasted until last year.

In defense of 5E, I still have little actual understanding of the rules, which honestly says something about the game system if a guy who hasn’t ran any D20 stuff could basically “wing it” for basically a decade and run converted on the fly 2E material for a 5E group.

I’m not particularly upset about 5E being “dead” either, but I can imagine that there are people who would still have some sort of emotional attachment, even if they aren’t necessarily angry.

I think your concern is justified. Try talking about anything other than 5.5 in a thread on any topic, no matter how applicable to other versions of 5e or even other games, if it has a 5.5 label.

I hope we still see a rich array of 5e general threads moving forward.
