if you put half the DMG in, the low cost part will no longer be trueDisagree. Starter set are a wonderful, low cost way to introduce new players and DMs to the game. It's the books after that that are optional.

The Red Box and Phandelver were pretty cheap. Loss leader is a thing.if you put half the DMG in, the low cost part will no longer be true
they are not loss leaders, they do make less on a profit on it, not a loss. In any case, the price would go up as there is more content, that is hard to avoidThe Red Box and Phandelver were pretty cheap. Loss leader is a thing.
Still worth it in my view.they are not loss leaders, they do make less on a profit on it, not a loss. In any case, the price would go up as there is more content, that is hard to avoid
why though? I don’t have you pegged as someone who would buy the 2024 DMG either way, if anything it being closer to the 2014 one should be a detriment for you purchasing itStill worth it in my view.
I'm trying to think of others. I had a great experience with starter sets in days of yore, and I'd lije to see others having the same.why though? I liked the way Fre League did it with Alien starter set - inasmuch as if you wanted to keep playing their cinematic scenarios being released, you could just use the starter set rules and core book not required. The core book would give more options, and allow for more free form campaigning, but if sticking to published adventures as such, not needed. So your assertion is that the core rulebooks are optional?
Is this what is called whataboutism?Look, some of us cut our teeth on Twitter, where D&D is crap and people who play D&D are stupid sheeple and if you don't play Pathfinder instead you're an ignorant phillistine; this barely registers on the Richter scale of "D&D is bad, play this instead" arguments.
I don’t think you can make the argument that people do not have a good time with the 5e starter sets thoughI'm trying to think of others. I had a great experience with starter sets in days of yore, and I'd lije to see others having the same.
I think a good starter set is critical for a game that's trying to reach a large audience. I know I've run the Beginner's Box for PF2 six times at this point. I've played two scenarios with them for 5E. They are a great way to introduce new players to the hobby.I don’t think you can make the argument that people do not have a good time with the 5e starter sets though
