The MM's intro on alignment: "The alignment specified in a monster’s stat block is a default suggestion of how to roleplay the monster, inspired by its traditional role in the game or real-world folklore. Change a monster’s alignment to suit your storytelling needs. The Neutral alignment, in particular, is an invitation for you to consider whether an individual leans toward one of the other alignments."

My emphasis. That's an interesting inclusion.

OK, so that tells me that Lizard folk can be considered Humanoid by RAW if Humanoid = NPC and Scout (NPC) = lizardfolk.
The Lizardfolk entry says they are.

Lizardfolk dwell in wildernesses suffused with primal magic. While many lizardfolk are Humanoids with varied skills, some forge powerful bonds with the Elemental Plane of Earth, granting them magical connections to the cycle of growth and rebirth.

I think some folks are latching too hard onto the existence of non-humanoid types for primarily humanoid creatures. It's becoming apparent that the idea here is diversity and versatility.
The eyebrow raise is: Humanoids cannot be demonized, but Nonhumanoids can.

Because some of the Nonhumanoids are playable species, it is the Orc dilemma all over the again.

With Humanoids, they are humanlike. Done.

But with the Nonhumanoids, it remains unclear when it is ok to lean on demonizations, stereotypes, etcetera, and when it isnt.

Interestingly - the MM intro still lists a Small creature's Hit Point Die as a d6, but I note that the NPC stat blocks that indicate a creature can be either Medium or Small don't take that into account in their hit point line. They all just get to use d8s even if they're Small.

I literally don't care about that one whit and wasn't talking about it. Killing orcs or gnolls or zombies is all the same to me.

What I was talking about was people not being able to wrap their brains around some lizardfolk being type: humanoid and some being type:elemental.

That part is easy. They literally undergo a ritual to change their planar nature.

For some species, the transformation happens gradually as future generations adapt to the new plane. But some individuals do it on purpose by means of magic.
