Mine doesn't require me to do that either; the knife switch is just outside. And "winter" just doesn't mean as much to us in the Greater Los Angeles area.
My point was that even if we didn't have that knife switch out there, someone motivated to do that sort of thing could do so with just a bit more effort (and slightly more time and visibility).
