I have an abiding love for Star Wars that persists in spite of the inconsistent quality of the material. I even made it through Boba Fett. Andor may have wrecked the franchise for me though, because it showed the potential, and now I want The Mandalorian to be at that level.
Phantom Menace is a fantastic movie. I said it on Day 1. I literally saw it 3 times in the theater by 230 PM opening day.Well I find myself laid up for a while with some back issues. So I decided that I am
Going to watch a lot of the Star Wars series in chronological order. Not all of it mind you. Six seasons of Clone Wars is a bit much. I’m not quite that laid up. I hope.
So I just finished watching Phantom Menace. I’d seen it years ago and never watched it again- mostly on the feeling that the movie was terrible.
It’s not. It’s nowhere near as bad as critics make it out to be. Lots of action, visually stunning and a decent story. Sure there’s some pretty bad acting, but, it’s not like I watch Star Wars for the acting.
Yup some of the accents and whatnot are definitely pretty cringeworthy these days. But y’know what? Jar Jar isn’t all that bad. Pretty standard goofy Star Wars fare. And hes not actually in all that much of the movie.
Fight scene with Maul is still one of the best lightsaber scenes ever. Music score is fantastic.
Is it the best movie ever? Of course not. But it’s also nowhere near as bad as I remember. I think I bought into the general fandom wankery a bit too much
Interested to see how Attack oftheClones holds up.
Phantom Menace is my 2nd most rewatched film of the Saga (New Hope is first). I fought the good fight online for over a decade with the haters and am so happy to finally seeing it get the love it so deserves. Saw it about 10 times in the theatre and then when it came out on VHS I was at home for a week recovering from a broken collar bone and just kept watching and rewinding and watching again.Phantom Menace is a fantastic movie. I love the prequels and i was not a kid when they came out. Loved every minute of them.

Every Star Wars movie has issues. I don't care as long as theyr good.Phantom Menace has several issues, but I still like it and it is my favorite among the prequel trilogy.
For me PM isn't watched more than any original trilogy but though I like Revenge of the Sith more I watch Phantom Menace more because it's just more fun. I find Revenge of the Sith hard to watch because I really FEEL for Anakin and no movie has ever made me that emotional towards a villain before.Phantom Menace is my 2nd most rewatched film of the Saga (New Hope is first). And the absolute best part of the prequel trilogy was introducing my nephews to Star Wars by starting with E1 and then watching them be absolutely devistated when Anakin turned to the dark side in E3. It blew their minds. And they were terrified when Luke fought Vader in ESB because they didn't want Luke to kill his dad, only for Vader to tell him. After watching them watch through in order, I'll die on the hill that it's the best way to watch fresh.
I agree with your overall assessment of Han's ark in the OT and how Solo feels out of place with how the character is first introduced, but having just recently rewatched ESB, I think you're doing him a disservice here.Han mentions bounty hunters once, then spends days arguing and being emotionally manipulative with Leia about their relationship, saying he's willing to stay if she professes her love for him, and deciding to stay with the Rebels longer any time something comes up. He doesn't give a second thought to the idea that bounty hunters could endanger his friends or the Rebels on Hoth. Frankly, that line only exists in the script to set up the scene later where Darth Vader addresses the bounty hunters (which is a hunt funded by the Empire; Boba Fett would have been chasing Han for Darth Vader regardless of his debt to Jabba). Also, Han treats anyone with a lower rank than him like absolute garbage.
At the end of RotJ, Han finally shows that he respects Leia's autonomy to make her own decisions about her life and relationships. Also, as a general he shows care and respect for his subordinates, going as far as taking personal risks to ensure his soldiers stay safe.
It did feel like getting trolled.I went to TPM as adult. Midnight screening.
Disappointment was real but it's no Highlander 2.
