D&D 5E (2014) Sorcerer vs. Wizard: Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better?

Are the sorcerer and the wizard basically the same, or pretty different?

Ya know, if I released that when I voted that this was a necro'ed thread, or I saw this back in 2015 I would have voted differently. I had very little time for the 2014 sorcerer. Just felt it was too restricted, particularly is spell selection. The new subclasses coming with additional spells prepared help a lot.
I would actually be interested in trying out a 2024 sorcerer.

IMO, 2024 does a better job differentiating them than 2014.

But they are still very similar and would rather have something else, like a warlord.
I want a Warlord too, and have for a long time now. But I don't think it was a choice between these and a Warlord. Artificer was maybe a choice between it and Warlord but Warlord was never going to be a core class in this game given the throw-back choice they made when initially designing 5e.

I'd like a Swordmage and Warden class too.

Any of those would of been better than another full caster.
And if you want to throwback, call it a Marshall.

Just read that an honestly that's an awful lot of abilities. Seems meaningfully more powerful than 5.5e. But I could be wrong since I only just now read through it.
Level Up characters are, mathematically, probably a little stronger than 5.0 characters (though about on par with 5.5). The impression I'm getting from your post, however, is that that and the number of abilities are being counted as negatives. I see neither as such, so I'm not sure we're on the same page.

I firmly think this is more powerful than a 5.5e martial character.

Even if it seems more powerful at first or second glance... I'm of the opinion you're probably still better off trying it and using it so you actually have a Warlord at your disposal in your game, rather than not using it and waiting hope against hope that WotC gets around to it. After all... in the years it would take for you to finally see a WotC-designed Warlord get published, you and your tables could be running and playtesting the Level Up Marshal and balancing it as needed as you go along. Heck, in truth you'd probably get it balanced for your table's needs way before WotC will actually get around to releasing theirs.

So if having a Warlord is really such a big deal to you and your game... I say don't wait! Take what's available and run with it. (Same holds true for any Psion or Arcane-Half-Caster stans out there.)
