The usage had dropped to just a few thousand users. I think most folks in rural areas who want internet have moved onto one of the satellite providers.

My rural grandparents don't even have a landline anymore, and according them most people their age are cutting them as unnecessary expenses.

I wanted to maintain a landline, as it would be a pain to try and update everyone and everything that uses that number by default, so I went VOIP and save myself maybe $500 a year by doing it.

They haven't been able to figure out the right way to do it for twenty years or so -- how am I going to field their endless questions once the first link in the chain is broken? It's a nightmare! I may have to cancel my cell phone!

I remember having to create a big desktop icon on my parent's computer back in the day that literally said GO TO THE INTERNET, and it just opened up Internet Explorer instead of them trying to hit AOL.
