ChatGPT lies then gaslights reporter with fake transcript

Provided this development leads somewhere other than a technological dead end, right now we are at the "Time sharing" stage of personal computing. Still decades away from the right developments that allow for mass adoption and at least one or two bubbles that will decimate the companies pedling it. At least the internet companies that survived got to build assets that could be leveraged for survival, but the current AI companies will only have obsolete rigs to show for it once this goes away.

There is going to be a LOT of energy infrastructure developed at least, and data centers? I guess?

It already isn't a technological dead end for me. It's already supplanted Google search for most of my needs, so even if it ceased to advance further than where it is right now, it would already prove to be an invaluable tool for me. I'm closer to upgrading my $20/month Plus sub to a $200/month Pro plan than I am to dropping it altogether.

I am not sharing your views. Paying customers in the range on millions start counting at adoption by the general public, even if it is not widespread. We're talking about it on a board about pretending to be elves. It is a topic of civil service exams. We have cabinet miniisters in charge of it. I think it is entering the general awareness more than you think.

On the legacy, well, we'll still get at least the current model that are runnnable on home computers. The best image making model right now aren't Midjourney or ChatGPT, but open source models you can run at home for free (Qwen Image, Hunyuan...) on current consumer hardware. If tomorrow suddenly AI disappeared by a Thanos snap of finger, the legacy would be a net positive.

Yeah, I still remember how trendy machine learning was in the tech world a decade-ish ago, when a bunch of people were swearing that ML was the basis of truly intelligent machines and every tech company was racing to jam ML features into their product so they could claim to be using "advanced AI and ML." After a few years, nobody in my workplace would even entertain a product pitch involving ML unless the sales staff could explain what the ML was actually necessary for. It speedran all the way to becoming a meaningless buzzword. That was called "AI" at the time, as was speech recognition tech. And before that, it was reverse image search, and before that it was Chess engines, and so forth. I've lost track of how many times we've been through the cycle of AI boom, bust, and "AI winter" until a new technology/technique is pioneered and the boom starts all over again. Like you said, even older than personal computers. IIRC Alan Turing was already thinking about AI before transistors existed.
Machine learning hasn't gone anywhere. It's still all over the place in tech. They just don't use the term or the acronym to describe how their products work anymore.

But yeah, it's still machine learning, but every company that used ML clicked CTRL-F to Find/Replace and swap "ML" for "AI" on their website.

It's like would you like some bitcoins? The only catch is you get a bucket of gasoline dumped on you, and set on fire. Thiel said he'd cover the Earth with data centers, really kind of same difference. We defeated a google one near us recently.

Ha! #accurate. This is why we can't have nice things. 🪙🪣🔥

I've been to actual warzones and slums the size of whole cities in the west.

Even if you hate the current (very hateable) status quo, I would caution against getting too excited about the sea change.
I didn't say I was excited for it. Just that if what you predicted happens (which I find as a real possibility), then the next step will have no choice but to happen/

BTW, look at France, which right now is having a nation wide strike for better conditions from the government. I think I need to stop there as this is wandering to close to politics.
