There are IMO plenty of cases where there is. 5.0 used to provide options for different rule systems. 5.5 doesn't. Do you see that as a good thing?

I still use gritty realism because despite all the protests from people who don't play with the 2024 rules, the 2024 and 2014 rules work together rather well.

Yes, I picked an intentional hyperbolic, no middle ground example so we wouldn't bog down the example with attempting to square the circle on it. I didn't want people to focus on solving the example and miss the point.

Like I said, the point is taken. But there's still some squaring of the circle you could do. The game isn't zero sum.

For those of you who indicated that you talked your way through every single encounter in 1E - exactly how did you do it?

Did your DM handwave languages?
Did the DM just assume every monster and his uncle spoke Common?
Did you ensure that at least a few PC's had Comprehend Language prepared?
With 5 players, you could probably get up to 10 languages on average, but that wouldn't cover every monster you'd come across.

So how did you communicate with every single monster?

I'm not ranting. But D&D is by far the most popular RPG. You think everyone playing 5.5 is doing so because it's their favorite RPG and they wouldn't play any other game or version if it was entirely up to them? People on this forum have said otherwise. People play the games they do for all sorts of reasons.

Talk if you can (or gesture, whatever), whether through persuasion, bargaining deception, intimidation, or seduction. Or stealth. Or offering food. Or violence. Whatever it takes. People overcome challenges with other creatures without killing all the time, in fiction and in real life.
