Poll: VTT Users - Do you prefer self-hosted or cloud-based VTTs?

Are you more likely to try a new VTT if it offers a one-time purchase?

Back in the day, I used to host games using various VTT's - Maptools being a big one I used for a long time. And the problem with self hosting is you are responsible for all the connections. I remember back in the day that images had to be about 100k or so or they simply wouldn't work. Once we moved to Fantasy Grounds, after we managed to sort out some of the connectivity issues, it was so much easier. Image size generally is never a problem, within reason. I still try to keep everything under 1 meg, and about 50k for tokens, but, that's because it makes loading faster.

I'll never go back to self hosting.

Fantasy Grounds is self hosted. ..
Anyway, sure, self-hosting can have drawbacks, but internet bandwidth is much better for most of us now days.

Okay, I enjoy both playing and running. And while I could do it, many of my other friends who run couldn't get self-hosted solutions to work. Firewall settings, port forwarding, all that. And if they do they then spent effectively prep time in things like upgrades and such.

But we're also at the point of our lives were <$10 a month subscription fee for the GM isn't a big deal.

But onto that, had one GM buy Foundry for the PF2r support (before it went free). Spent a lot of time trying to self-host and failing. Then went for one of the suggested cloud services, and in the year plus campaign couldn't figure out how to add in anything, so we were missing basic (from Roll20) functionality like being able to pop out character sheets from the window.

So I'm for cloud-based options, but only native ones that are well integrated and can provide support.

I'll note I haven't seen that kind of problem with Maptool in years now. Admittedly, I've got a big pipe, but the program has also been revised over time and many problems it was once prone to it just--isn't--anymore.
