Back in the day, I used to host games using various VTT's - Maptools being a big one I used for a long time. And the problem with self hosting is you are responsible for all the connections. I remember back in the day that images had to be about 100k or so or they simply wouldn't work. Once we moved to Fantasy Grounds, after we managed to sort out some of the connectivity issues, it was so much easier. Image size generally is never a problem, within reason. I still try to keep everything under 1 meg, and about 50k for tokens, but, that's because it makes loading faster.
