Calamar heads to a secluded spot on the beach and goes over the list of spells he has memorized in his head. He has already planned his actions over and over in his mind, every movement of this little rogue he knows. He stands confidently in the light of the setting sun. Just enough light to see by and be effective. He awaits only for the troublesome and rude little rogue.

You may bring a second if you wish," he pauses for a moment, "it suddenly occurs to me that someone of your limited mind may not know what that is. Someone to negotiate on your behalf. I await you little coward."
Cain follows Calamar out the door. "You want seconds?" thinks the halfling, "He're how many seconds you've got: 5, 4, 3..." As he crosses the threshold, Cain draws his shortsword and charges the wizard. "2, 1..."

OOC: Cain doesn't wait for the beach. He attacks Calamar in the street as soon as he leaves the Red Dragon. Since Calamar doesn't seem to be expecting it (and didn't describe any precautions taken enroute to the beach) maybe I can roll bluff vs sense motive to get a surprise round?

OOC, Actually, it was stated in the back room that I keep an eye out for you at all times, whether you come through the front door, a window, or just in general and my hesitation and statment about not expecting you to fight fairly suggests that I continue to not trust you and be prepared for your surprise attack.

Calamar's last stated action was that if you approach me or move to attack me I cast a Ray of enfeeblement on you and that I also keep at least five feet distance between yourself and myself. I fear that you have doomed yourself now though, there is no fighting within the inn or the city proper from what I understand. By attacking me in the threshold of the door, you have just doomed yourself to prison or worse.

OOC, also, since you attacked me in the Inn of the Red Dragon, I moved the thread to there, don't reply here

OOC:
Let me clarify who I meant by "he" , since it might have been ambiguous:
As soon as CAIN crosses the threshold, CAIN draws his sword and charges CALAMAR, who is already out in the street.

I know that you stated in the Croc hunt thread that Calamar had a readied action to cast Ray of Enfeeblement. Realize that you cannot ready an action before initiative is rolled, nor can you maintain a readied action while walking down the street etc.

OOC: Alright. I'll be judging this duel. Rules mechanics and judgements will be posted in Cyan. Judge's decisions are final. When you post your next action, please describe in character what you intend to do, and then add an OCC comment with the precise actions you wish you take, and the pertinent bonuses. Though I check the boards several times a day, I'm not on-line constantly, so be patient if I don't respnd immediately. Thank you.

Cain's countdown negates any possibility of a surprise round. But by the same respect, Calamar's readied action was announced back in the Inn's back room with regards to a different situation. You can ready an action outside of combat, but you cannot really do anything else in the meantime. The action has not been re-readied since the back room, though Calamar has taken other actions.

Initiative
Calamar: 5 +1 = 6
Cain: 9 +4 = 13

Outside the Red Dragon Inn, the incredibly life-like statue of the Inn's namesake glowers down at the two opponents.

Calamar, focused upon the tactics he anticipates using against the unctuous little runt, doesn't fully catch the meaning of the halfling's countdown. He turns around to find out just what the shrunken midget going on about, only to find the rogue rushing at him with sword drawn. Calamar can only stand there gape-mouthed as Cain thrusts his blade deep into the wizard's vitals. Despite his normal pigmentation, Calamar's face turns an odd shade of grey in reponse to the intense and sudden pain. Blood flows freely down the front of his robes.

Cain charges with his short sword. Attack: 11 +1 +2 = 14 vs. AC 10 (Calamar is flatfooted). Damage (sneak attack): 3 + 5 = 8 hp. Calamar is now at 2 hit points.

Rocco hasn't really posted an action for this initial round. I'll continue the round, once he posts his response.

At the flash of steel and the spurt of blood, screams and yells break out nearby as bystanders flee for cover.

UH, stop replying here, you attacked me in the inn, not here

Gentlemen, since you are set in this Duel, please continue to conduct it's outcome HERE, not in the Red Dragon Inn thread.

Yes, you are fighting in the Inn (or right outside, etc...), but that thread is primarily for DMs to introduce adventures and for new players to get the lay of the land. Any sort of combat is going to bog down the thread with posts that mean nothing for 95% of the players. I had a similar problem with one of my games, where my players (and myself) were blathering on between adventures and were asked to 'take it elsewhere' for the good of those not directly involved.

OOC first, this little psychotic, oh forget it. Anyway, where are you getting my character from, he should have 10 hit points, 4 first level, + 3 CON and + 3 toad familiar. ANd actually, if we never made it down to the beach, since the jerk attacked in the doorway, I would assume that I could have had a readied action. Both effects my next actions.

Also, by continuing it in the bar, it makes way for those of noble hearts who wish to interrupt. He had the chance to fight me alone on the beach, he blew it, that too is not fair.
Also you jerk, my character dies, each new one will have the sub title Cain killer, your a childish jerk who takes role-playing to seriously. You wanted a duel, I didn't that is why I didn't follow out the first time. I decided to humor you and set rules before hand, I figured something non lethal to settle honor or whatever your misguided mind thought was wrong. You have made an enemy this day, one that you will not like in the future.

That was a misread on my part. I'm sorry. It's fixed.

Never assume anything. Read my first post again. Judge's decisions are final.
