How Close is D&D Encounters to you?

Within walking distance. There's also a meetup.com group that I run. We have a monthly RPG game day with 2 different games (4 if we get enough people). Usually we get between 6 and 12 people show up each month, and are looking to grow. We also have a board game day at my house once a month...

    Define "grognard"

I'm with Hobo. Someone who likes an older version of a game, dislikes a newer version, and is grumbly and complainy about it. Frequently make appeals to authority to prove their way of playing is better than anyone elses.

Looking for a Good First Timer RPG

Old D&D also tends to kill you for touching, looking at, opening, or doing the wrong thing with very little or no warning or notice. Savage Worlds is an excellent suggestion. The core rules are nice and slim, and easy to adapt to whatever setting you want.

How can I stall combat for a couple rounds?

Ultimatley, it sounds like you want to have a more cinematic game, and so do your players. I'm going to suggest Savage Worlds. It uses minis, or not. Instead of set feats or powers there's a variety of tricks the PCs can do. Creating antagonists is very easy, and converting something would...

Looking for a Good First Timer RPG

Agreed. I seriously feel that gaming would be a bigger hobby if D&D weren't the one that most people start on. Anyway, if you just want to get her feet wet, get a copy of Dread. Actually get a copy anyway, because Dread is awesome. Its a one-shot survival horror game. Fill out a...

    Ever run a D&D campaign as a D&D game?

A couple of years ago at GenCon, I ran a Buffy the Vampire Slayer game called 'Dungeons and Bunnies" The game started with the original cast gathered for Anya's birthday party. Anya was an ex-demon, who had spent hundreds of years granting vengeful wishes to wronged women. One of her past...

4th ed's adventure layout: best thing it has brought to D&D?

I don't like published adventures, for any system. I rarely run them, and if I do run a longer one, I'll edit it so much that using one really doesn't save me any time or effort. However, sometimes you need a game at the drop of a hat. 4e is great for this, with DDI we can have characters in...

    "Lethal" games?

What's all this 'old version' stuff? I run 6th edition CoC regularly, and its just about as deadly as the original. Let's see, last one shot I ran - One PC stabbed to death by a strange goat-man - One dessicated and drained of life by a Colour so bad she caused people looking at her to roll...

Favote Fantasy RPG(s) other than D&D

I'm not a big fantasy guy, but if I do get the itch I'm probably going to want to put my own spin on it. Right now my current darling for that is Savage Worlds. Using it for fantasy works pretty well, and the fast pace of the miniatures gives you a good dungeon crawly feeling. Another would...

    Grognard good...grognard bad

How I wish this were true. Grognard literally means 'grumbler'. How is someone a grognard if they aren't grumbling?

    Gaming + Text Messages

One problem we would have is not everyone in the group uses a cell phone. I know, but it does happen :)

    Grognard good...grognard bad

Grammar grognard :P Seriously, the point isn't if you like or dislike 4e, its if you consider those who do to be 'lesser' gamers. That is the heart of grognard. I don't really like 4e all that much, its a good game, and I consider it to be the least terrible version of D&D, but I appreciate...
