    2E Class Creation Rules

It's interesting to me that you say that. A point-buy D&D has been my 'holy grail' ever since. POINT ONE Skills & Powers / Spells & Magic were crack to me. I remember spending an entire Christmas break just killing that system. We were playing at the time a game where you could buy...

    2E Class Creation Rules

Re: rolling then building a class, yeah... how else would you do it? *grin* Also, the restrictions were enforced very strictly. Have to be lawful, check, must be good, check, character only has six magic items, no problem. Excess magic items either traded to other party members on X-for-1...

    2E Class Creation Rules

I’m just writing in response to a thread started by Mercurius. In it he mentioned the 2E character class creation rules as a thing ‘lost’ in 3E and 4E. Others seem to think those rules were way underpowered. This is NOT an attack on those people, but an honest question of how our views were...

How do you Build your Character?

I start by breaking something. My goal is to have a character so good at dealing melee damage in some way that everybody else says, "That's ridiculous." It usually starts with my seeing something that tickles the brain that says I can break it, then when we start the next campaign I build it...

    Rules overload for players

I tend to agree with the OP, though perhaps not for 'normal' reasons. We're a bunch of 30s-aged folks, some of whom were hard-core in our college days and some of whom just weren't, We tend to play once or twice per year. The guys who weren't 'gamers' were given fighters or other 'simple' 3E...

    alternate d20 damage rules

When I was running an alternate of the "Grim and Gritty" rules I wanted something very similar to what you're looking for, but simplicity and consistency with existing rulesets were key. So for us damage was the exact same as normal with two changes: (i) The amount by which your 'to hit' roll...

Baby Gifts for a Gamer (and his Non-Gamer Wife)

Okay, so I have an eight month old boy and this thread is perfect for me. But I have to know - where did you find all those dice? Everywhere I look they are $6-$20 apiece, and I'm not sure I can convince myself to pay $75+shipping for a full set. Same with the "+4 hide -4 grapple" shirt...

    Life and the Game

Investment Banker / Leveraged Finance earlier in my career. Now I'm involved in oversight / management of fixed income trading operations (corp bonds, rates, commodities, fx, CDS, CLO/CDO, etc.). Yeah, my institution helped ruin Christmas, but we're a small shop in the grand scheme of things.

    Thinking about Warhammer?

I have the WHFRP core book and am pretty interested in learning more about this game. So I read it and then went to google to see what's out there. I found FFG, Black Industries, etc., and a few sites that had boards, but nothing even 2% like Enworld (I was hoping for at least 25%, though...

    Multiclass and two-character combos

Did this issue get settled for sure, whether in this thread or elsewhere? One of my PCs is a Rogue that took Ranger multiclass on my reading that, while he can only choose a quarry 1/combat, once the quarry has been established he qualifies for the extra damage 1/round. The obvious downside is...

Did the blogs section change ENWorld boards?

Wow. I had no idea there were blogs. I'm a serious long-term lurker who rarely posts, but my access point has always just been to click on 'forums' and then click on whatever subset interested me - now it's the 4E stuff. Finding out that there's an entire other section called 'blogs' is...

    Rangers and Heavy Thrown Weapons

Maybe I'm missing a subtlety to your point here, but: Heavy Thrown: You hurl a thrown weapon from your hand, rather than using it to loose a projectile. A ranged basic attack with a heavy thrown weapon uses your Strength instead of your Dexterity for the attack and damage rolls.

D&D 4E How do you run attack rolls in 4e?

I actually go one step further - basically, players roll all dice that affect them. So rather than having a monster's +5 attack roll against a player's 16 AC, implying 50% chance of hit, I have the player roll a +6 AC roll vs. the monster's 17 defense roll, implying 50% chance of hit. Key...

    Replacing dead party members

My replacement character rules have always been some variation of the following across 1st, 2nd, and 3rd edition (we're still gearing up for 4th): * You must choose a new race and class (vs. old character). This encourages player diversity. * You cannot choose the same class as an existing...
