Weiss & Hickman

By far... Margaret Weiss, Tracy Hickman and friends reenacting Dragons of Autumns Twilight! Incredible... I felt like I did reading it when it was first released in the 80s.

After that... all the good grabs I made at the auction!

Playing "A Mon Alone", the two-round high-level Living Force adventure. It was a great story, and had us on the edges of our seats (and in fear for our PCs' lives) for the entire 11 hours. We had a great GM in Vic Polites, and a group of players that have played together online many times, but face-to-face very few times.

We all survived, but it was a close thing -- the party spent 11 Force Points, burned through at least a dozen Heroic Surges, and one player had to use her "Future Vision" cert to keep from being killed on a massive critical hit.

All in all, one of the most enjoyable games I've *ever* played in, in any venue.

Vic's an old friend, and one of the best GMs I know. You were really lucky to get him! This game sounded like a blast.

Finally got my pics from the convention downloaded! Here's a picture from my coolest con moment: from left to right are Brian Stith, author of the minotaur Horde Book; Jonathan Tweet, graciously posing with the ashmalkin frisbee we gave him 'cause he said he liked the idea of a stirge-riding fey; myself, beaming like a madman; and Sang Lee, B3 illustrator extraordinare.

What's this "Nutkinland" you speak of? ;)

Assuming that NKL existed (which I am told it does not) you were invited to our little scheming dinner and a nice round of CoC after.

I had really hoped to meet up with you and Teflon but Buttercup says you guys must have gotten lost.

Yeah, I know. I went to the Alkatraz and looked around a little, but didn't recongize anyone (which isn't saying a WHOLE lot since I only think I've met Buttercup, Hatter, Dink (who wasn't there AFIAIK), Leopold, and Boz before.) I am told they seated you guys upstairs, where I didn't think to look. :(

Ah, well. Catch up with you next year.

Mine was meeting Jonathan Tweet. In 1994, it was Ars Magica (which he co-created) that got me back into roleplaying after far too long, and it was hearing that he was part of the Third Edition design team that got me interested in playing D&D again. I think I failed to express to him even one percent of my gratitude and respect, but just getting the chance to try was an incredible experience for me.

Well, if that was your high point you'll be happy to know I sat at the table next to Jonathan on Sunday night and overheard him enthusiastically speaking about your products to a group of about 11. For a good 10 mintues or so..... :)

For us, it was meeting everyone again (or for the first time) and just chatting. Its a homecoming in a strange sort of way and wish we could make it next year, but don't think that will happen.

OK, this may sound really weird, but my favourite moment of GenCon 2004 was when Gelfling #2 spontaneously burst into tears Sunday morning. We were about to walk through the revolving doors at the Hyatt, when she expolded into sobs, burying her wet, red face in my shirt.

It was my fave moment, not because I like seeing my kid cry, but because she was externalizing what I was feeling: feeling overwhelmed by how much stuff there was to do, disappointment about how much we missed, overexcitement about the wonderful things left to do, nostalgia for what had been done/experienced, and were finished, the prospects of not seeing my wonderful friends for another year, missing home, sleep deprivation...

It was everything I was feeling deep down, brought to the surface.

Other moments:
-walking with Dave Arneson over to the Exhibitor's hall, chatting.
-the girls congratulating some of the ENnies winners, and being recognized.
-swimming with the girls on Thursday afternoon at the Hyatt.
-chatting with a very helpful guy at the Information booth who did great sound effects, joking about a DM who tended to use a game show announcer voice, and the ensuing 5 minutes of joking between us "do you choose what's behind tapestry number 1, secret door number 2, or what's in this box?"... and it being totally cool, and funny, and comfortable, and us understanding exactly what the other was saying
-being the first people at GenCon to demo Heroscape, and doing so with one of the designers, and chatting about the philosophy behind the original creation
-getting a wonderful hug from Crothian. I seriously love that man. Teflon Billy, Psion, Ryan, and the rest... great guys, but Chris makes me want to bake a pie, and settle down.
-hanging with some of the WhiteWolf krewe who showed up at the Canadiana Suite, getting to know the art director for Exalted. A great bunch of people.
-hosting the Canadiana Suite.
-sitting down with the code monkey from Paradigm and finding out that we don't have to totally rewrite the manuscript we'd submitted, just add another chapter. Phew.
-meeting Keith Baker before he got swamped, and chatting with the guy who did the dragonshards art, having him happy that I noticed his excellent use of negative space.
-seeing my youngest daughter's brilliant smile and excitement about having met the REAL Spiderman (not just some actor in a movie).

and most importantly:

-talking with Peter Adkison and thanking him for a wonderful weekend.
