Well, Angus McBride has been dead for a year or two now, so it might take more than the lure of cash to bring him back to do artwork.

EDIT: Whoops! My bad. He died this last May, so only 4-5 months ago.

:( Oh man....I'm really sorry to hear that he passed away. I thought the man was brilliant. I *loved* all those MERP and Rolemaster covers.

As for the original topic. I dig WAR, but wasn't much of a fan of the other "Big" 3E artists.

Lockwood I could deal with. Sam Wood was 9 times out of ten a big miss for my tastes, but when he hit, he hit hard. I think his 3.0 Goblin in the MM is just excellent for example.

I like the 4E DMG and MM covers quite a bit! The PHB I don't care for at all. Still I'm glad to see a return to artwork on the covers. The "tome" look was pretty cool at first but got old real quick for me.

I'm also a WAR fan who doesn't particularly dig the PHB cover we've seen previewed. But what I really wanted to comment on was one of my favorite details of ainatan's cover - the relocation of the title bar to the top of the page, rather than 1/4 of the way down with an additional inch of art at the top. I'd thought that relocating that bar would be an improvement; seeing it actually mocked up really confirms it. (Although oddly I'm okay with the bar at the "Core Rules" bottom being raised a bit rather than pinned to the page bottom.)

I'd really like to see tweaks to their chosen trade dress along the lines of what you've done here. I'm not going to stay up nights worrying about it, though. Or break out Photoshop - thanks for taking care of that urge for me. ;)

There were a lot of postings about this after the Gencon release. I hope they redo it. Why we can't get a party of adventurers in a "Dungeon" fighting a "Dragon" I'll never know. Here's the redux cover I did some time ago. While I'm not WAR's biggest fan, this is pretty close to perfect for me.

And it kinda looks like this core rules cover:

Green dragon, adventurers, stairs, color scheme. I like it. Plus, it was the first set I owned. 4e rules, BD&D feel! (and Thouls, IIRC)

Am I the only person ever who LIKED the "Tome" look to the 3.whatever books?
I don't know I always thought it looked better than art depicting whatever adventure the artist had in mind.
The new art looks way too bright and shiny to me, not dark and dungeon-y enough.

I absolutely love the tome style of the 3.x core books. I think it's the best D&D art style ever. However, there've been dozens of variations on it - plus all those d20 books that copied it - and I'm very ready to move on.

Agreed; it was a good idea, and very welcome after 2nd edition. It really highlighted that yes, this was a system of interconnecting parts that worked together, instead of the mish-mash of tables and disconnected rules in the earlier editions.

Now, with a new edition coming, I think it should have a new look as well; hence, the full-picture covers. (Hmm... considering that WotC has had 4e under development for quite a some time now, I wonder if the covers of Heroes of Horror and Heroes of Battle were test balloons for the new edition covers?)

YES! YES! YES! Excellent cover. WoTC, heed our call, make this the cover of the PHB!
