D&D 5E Exclusive D&D Next Campaign available at Gen Con Only

Dragonhelm

I'm a little surprised that we have had four pages of discussion, yet I'm not seeing a single mention of Daggerford or the history of Dragonspear Castle. Huh.

Back in Hordes of Dragonspear, the main dragon antagonist was a black dragon named Maelester Rex (IIRC). He only had one horn. Now, this was when black dragon horns were straight. There was an actual Dragonspear magic item made from the horn.

Here's as much of the picture as we have:

Anyone know who the artist is?

That's an awesome picture of a red dragon. Too bad it only has AC 15 in D&D Next, LOL. But on a more serious note, I do hope they make the next playtest available more broadly and in June and that we don't have to wait until GenCon (or longer for those of us who can't go to GenCon) to see the next packet.

Hrrmph.

I want to buy things from Wizards. When they finally get around to putting a few adventures in print, they won't sell them to me?

Never underestimate the ability of a game publisher to cut its own throat. I can understand the desire for exclusivity, particularly with a beta product so they assess reactions and keep costs low. But personally, I think they would be better served by making it more available, at least in the form of a PDF released after the convention. The risk of a negative reaction is worth taking and they need to take more chances IMO.

What, the dozens upon dozens of re-released modules from all eras of D&D that WotC has finally opened up to everyone to purchase through dndclassics.com is no longer enough again? Holding back on this one new module and all of a sudden they're back to being idiots?

Oh, how soon they forget. Even now... give an inch and people demand a mile.

Not to mention that in the course of the playtest they have already given away 3 original adventures, 2 full conversions of classic modules, and conversion notes for two Encounters seasons as well as the entire S series.

What chaps me about the Gencon exclusive is sale is.....I'm wondering about my incentive to remain a ddi subscriber .....why nothing special for loyalists. I like 4e and play it, but will almost assuredly move on to D&D Next. I generally like what I see so far and rarely play 4e anymore (have been playing deathwatch & iron kingdoms recently). 4e is limited to one monthly game with other d&d being playtesting sessions of Next.

Since Dungeon and Dragon aren't doing much about Next and I'm moving on from 4e...unless DDI does something to sweeten the pot (like give subscribers access even via PDF after Gencon to the Ghosts of Drafonspear) I don't feel a reason to remain a subscriber. One friend suggested that if subscribers started leaving in droves it might spur WotC to pick up the pace
