D&D 5E (IC) Vault of the Dracolich (Dispensables)

Location: Troglodyte Fighting Pit

Encounter: Bobranthus vs the Bug-Beast

Round Zero

Bob readies himself for the battle to come. He realises just too late that the meat is a distraction, as the shaking there stops and the ground under his feet explodes into action. He is lifted into the air by powerful pincers, which dig deep into his flesh, all the while burning him with a searing acid.

An insect the size of a horse, covered in a thick red carapace of solid armour, climbs out of the ground, shaking off dirt and holding Bob in a crushing grip.

GM: Oops. Sorry about that. Those were too good of rolls right out of the gate... is there any way to justify him raging? I guess if there's nothing to attack, it doesn't really make sense.

[sblock=Notes]
Bobranthus Surprised (rolled a 7 vs a dc11)

OOC: No worries, I know they are built for this kind of tactic. And Bob had little chance of escaping outright. I'll try not to metagame Bob's demise too much. LOL

Bobranthus lets out a cry of surprise as he is hurled into the air and then a bellow of immense pain as his leg is bitten by the newly arisen creature. But just moment's later his moans turn into boistrous laughter and he places a hand on each of the creatures jaws, slowly but surely he wrenches himself free and as he catches his footing on the dirt floor he turns to face his attacker, drawing his signature weapons as he does. "Ohoh! Nice trick, but now you face Bobrabthus, son of Bobryth!"

Encounter: Bobranthus vs the Bug-Beast

Round One

Bob tears himself free from the Bug-Beast's death grip, and the troglodyte crowd goes wild. The insect insect snaps it's mandibles as if, it too, can't believe Bob is no longer there. Then it scuttles around the perimeter of the pit, spraying acid from it's mouth in a long line at Bob as it goes.

GM: Oh, man! That bug is not letting up. Anyone want to "cheat" to help him? It's hard to say what isn't allowed.

OOC: I'll post my turn now. Not looking good for the brawney one...

Bobranthus Dex Save:: 1D20+2 = [4]+2 = 6

The laughter was interrupted by the acidic spray, Bob's skin seemed to be melting away and he had no cover to hide from the attack. As soon as the stream subsided, he took a moment to breath and then pounced on the creature with a vengeance. He sas laughing again, but it sounded pained and raspy.

Bobranthus is in trouble. With horror Sesto watches as a large insect (is it an enormous praying mantis?) emerges from the ground and grabs hold of and lifts Bobranthus up in the air. Bobranthus is strong and wrestles his way out of the grip. The horrible insect sprays something on Bobranthus and it causes Bob to miss his attack.
I can't just stand here and do nothing. Sesto tries to concentrate. What can I do? Bob is to far away for me to heal him... Lathanders blessing might help but what will this crowd do when they see me waving my hands around and sprinkle holy water??? Maybe I can be more subtle with a verbal spell only... let's see if I can blind the insect!
There is a lot of cheering and shouting from the troglodytes, and nobody seem to take notice when Sesto chants.

OOC: Sesto cast Blindness/Deafness on the bug-beast. Con saving throw vs DC 14. At the end of each of its turns, the target can make a Constitution saving throw. On a success, the spell ends.

Pyres rolls his eyes. He didn't have much power left, but he could do a little to help.

He focused on the creature. Nothing outward changed, so nobody would notice what he was doing, but fear infused the creature. Fear of Pyrus. At least it could distract him.

OOC: DC 13 Wisdom Save or be frightened of Pyrus. If Sesto's blindness spell works, this will have no effect, but it gives disadvantage on all attacks and ability checks while Pyrus is in sight. The creature would have to be out of sight of Pyrus to attempt the save again.

Hopefully one spell or the other will get through. And hopefully the creature doesn't have blind sense.

Round Two

Bob, after being sprayed with acid, has a terrible time finding a way past the Bug-Beast's legs and mandibles. Even as Sesto blinds the creature (which thankfully none of the troglodytes seem to notice), the insect still manages to catch Bob in it's crushing death-grip.

GM: Coyote really wants the bug to eat Bob. Bob doesn't need to escape. He can just pound on the beast from in it's mandibles. He's got advantage, because it's blind. Oh! I keep forgetting, everyone but Bob needs to roll a dc12 Con Save or be poisoned. The close proximity of so many Trogs is nearly overwhelming! Bob is okay down in the pit. Okay from that, anyway. Anyone got healing word?

Sesto starts gaging. The Trog stench is unbelievable. Still, he manage to keep his snake steak lunch down and, through stench-induced tears, Sesto chants a few words of healing, which will help Bobranthus feel a little better. The noise and ruckus from the Troglodytes drenches the words from Sesto and nobody notices anything.
Coughing and retching, Sesto grabs a vial from his backpack and swiftly drinks it.

OOC: Con save vs Trog stench: 1D20+2 = [3]+2 = 5. Fail
Bonus action: Healing words: 1D4+4+3 = [1]+4+3 = 8 (including Disciple of Life)
Action: drink a vial of antitoxin (advantage on saving throws against poison for 1 hour. I think this is appropriate for the poisoned condition.)
Early Initiative: 1D20+1 = [8]+1 = 9, if necessary.
