Would you allow an extra background instead of Feat?

plisnithus8

Adventurer
Player wants to be a human opera singer (1st level).
If she is an entertainer but asks to also be a noble (variant so she has a little extra money plus servants), would you allow noble to replace her human variant feat?
Is it balanced?
Obviously the request is for role-play more than combat.

Absolutely! Two skills and two languages/tool proficiencies is right on par for a Feat, and the feature is a nice roleplaying ribbon. I’m less keen on the bonus starting equipment, but eh. It’s all stuff you’d be able to afford very early on, so no big deal.

I'd say yes, not too familiar with 5e feats (only played up to level 4, some time back and homebrew when DMing), but 2 extra skills (as a trade-off) shouldn't break anything. Sounds cool, go for it.

It's not unbalanced, but bear in mind that the backgrounds in the book are only examples. So the obvious alternative is to build a single background that's tailored to her backstory, using Entertainer and Noble as inspiration.

As above I would create an Opera Singer background.

Then if the player wants they can take the Prodigy feat for more skills and such.

None of the background abilities are very powerful.

I would allow it, but using the Prodigy feat from Xanthar's would yield better results, as that could give expertise in Perform skill.

The gold comes with Noble background (you could use the gold instead of starting gear option too). Entertainer background doesn't do anything like as much for you as Prodigy feat.

Great character concept, would totally allow it.
